There is no doubt that the Olympics are big news in the Dominican Republic. The DR U23 football (soccer) team (ranked 150th by FIFA), in its third match in the Paris Olympics on Tuesday, 30 July 2024, tied 1-1 with Uzbekistan (ranked 61st). The tie was not enough for the team to pass to the second round. The DR team had tied 0-0 with Egypt (ranked 36st), and lost 3-1 with Spain (ranked 2nd).
The possible scenarios regarding the game on Tuesday had been (a) if DOM were to beat Uzbekistan and Spain defeated Egypt, the Dominican team would qualify for the next round, a truly astounding feat for a first-time team. However, neither of these things happened as the team from Quisqueya took a 1-0 lead early in the second half but was later tied. And then Spain inexplicably lost 0-2 to Egypt.
