Marileidy Paulino’s honeymoon phase following her historic gold medal win at the Olympic Games seems to be on hold, tells Listin Diario sports writer Moises Mejia.
Paulino won gold on Friday, 9 August 2024 in Paris, but on Tuesday she was back training. She is due to compete on 25 August in the Diamond League. Her wins in the Silesia, Poland Diamond League races mean US$10,000 in earnings for her.
Hoy reports Paulino will also be running in the last stage of the Diamond League in Brussels, Belgium on 13-14 September, with the opportunity to cash in on another US$10,000.
She will also compete in the Athlos Track Meet Athlos track meet—an all-women’s competition that’s set for 26 September in New York City. The race is promising “the largest prize purse ever for a women’s track event,” with US$60,000 going to the winner of each race and prize money down to sixth place. She has accepted the invitation from meet co-organizer, Gabby Thomas of the United States who won gold in 200m in the Paris Olympic Games.
All athletes participating in Athlos NYC will earn more than the purse reward through our unique giveback program. 10% of all revenues from ticketing, commercial sponsorship, and broadcast will be re-distributed to all participating athletes, making this the biggest prize offering in the history of women’s track-only events.
So far, Paulino has won her previous Diamond League commitments. Her first victory came on 20 April in Xiamen, China, where she clocked a time of 50.08 seconds. Poland’s Natalia Kaczmarek (50.29) and the United States’ Britton Wilson (51.26) finished second and third, respectively.
Listin Diario lists the previous wins of Paulino in the Diamond League series. Paulino continued her winning streak in the second leg, held on 27 April in Suzhou, China. She finished with a time of 50.89 seconds, defeating American Talitha Diggs (51.77) and Barbados’ Sada Williams (52.00).
In the third leg in Oslo, Norway, Paulino clocked a time of 49.30 seconds, once again outpacing Kaczmarek (49.80) and American Alexis Holmes (50.40).
Her most recent victory came on 7 July in Paris, France, where Paulino recorded her season’s best time of 49.20 seconds, again beating Poland’s Kaczmarek (49.82) and Bahrain’s Salwa Naser (49.82), the silver medalist at the recent Olympic Games.
The Diamond League final will be held on 13 September in Brussels, Belgium, where Paulino will aim to become the champion of the 400m for the third consecutive year.
Paulino has already accumulated the points to win the Diamond Trophy in her event in the 400m. The trophy is the ultimate prize in the Diamond League, representing the pinnacle of achievement for the world’s best track and field athletes in each discipline for that season. Winning the trophy brings prestige, prize money, and direct entry into the World Championships.
Paulino seeks to keep her prime form to win in the Japan 2025 World Athletics Championships, and also break the world record (47.60) at that event. The cash awards for breaking a world record at the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo are substantial. Athletes who set a new world record during the championships will receive a reward of US$100,000. This incentive is part of a broader prize money structure that includes individual awards for medalists: gold medalists will earn US$70,000, silver medalists US$35,000, and bronze medalists US$22,000.
