Paris Olympic Games gold medalist Marileidy Paulino has turned down an offer of an apartment from Canadian businessman Antonio Carbone. Paulino announced via social media that her team contacted Carbone’s representative to formally decline the donation.
In her statement, Paulino suggested that Carbone consider donating the property to a nonprofit organization instead.
Carbone had announced he had given instructions to his architects and engineers to repair Paulino’s family home while they prepared the plans for a dwelling he was gifting to Paulino. He made the announcement before contacting Paulino.
Carbone is known for his connections to the casino industry and had been released in February 2024 after serving nine years in a Dominican prison. He had been sentenced to 20 years for attempted murder, accused of hiring a hitman to kill Dominican Fernando Báez Guerrero, another businessman and casino manager.
Carbone had been in preventive detention since 2015 at the San Pedro de Macorís Correction and Rehabilitation Center, facing charges from the Public Ministry along with his brother, Francesco Carbone. Although he was released after the Fourth Penal Chamber of the National District granted a habeas corpus petition, his past continues to spark controversy, as reported in Panorama.
In addition to his attempted murder conviction, Carbone faced another legal battle for alleged fraud involving his own companies, from which he was also acquitted.
Paulino was praised for her rejection of Carbone’s offer, regarding the ethical implications of accepting such a gesture from a figure with a controversial background.
