Vice President defends DR against charges of racism

Dominican Vice President Raquel Peña has once again stepped up to defend the Dominican Republic against charges of racism fostered by Amnesty International. These charges stem from the Dominican policy of deporting undocumented, illegal aliens from Dominican territory.

However, since the vast majority of these deportations involve people from neighboring Haiti, which is a predominately black nation, charges of racism are frequent. Vice President Peña, however, was not at all timid in her rebuttal of these accusations, telling Amnesty International that the Dominican nation defends its sovereignty, and guarantees the legality of each foreigner that is in the country.

She stated that the laws of the country are in no manner anti-immigrant. She went on to say that the international agencies can say whatever they want to say, but they must respect Dominican national sovereignty. The Vice President added: “Our policies have never been to the detriment of immigrants, no matter where they come from.”

Her position has been seconded by the Duarte Institute, an entity that honors the ideals of founding father Juan Pablo Duarte. Wilson Gomez, a spokesperson for the institute, told reporters, that no other nation has done more for Haiti than the Dominican Republic.

Amnesty International has never mentioned the plight of the Dominican Republic that shares a border of 400 km with Haiti and thus bears the social burdens of the chaos that has escalated over decades in Haiti. The Dominican Republic has filled in to serve the social services, such as medical, birthing, education services, that are lacking in Haiti. In Haiti, the worst violation of human rights is overlooked by international organizations — that of identity that is denied to the population because of the negligence of the Haitian governments and international organizations over the past decades.
