Bolivia and Dominican Republic eliminate visa requirements to boost tourism and regional integration

The Ministry of Foreign Relations of Bolivia announced that visa-free travel is now in place for citizens of Bolivia and the Dominican Republic. The move seeks to strengthen regional integration and cooperation. The agreement was signed on 8 August 2024 by Bolivian Foreign Minister Celinda Sosa Lunda and Dominican Ambassador Claudio Marte and goes into effect as of 2 September 2024.

There are several air connections to reach South America from the Punta Cana and Santo Domingo international airports. In recent months, Dominicans have been turning South America into their preferred vacation destination thanks to competitive airfares now available through the local-based airline, Arajet and international competitors.

The decision to waive visa requirements aims to stimulate tourism and economic activity between the two nations. “Bolivia, with its seven Unesco World Heritage Sites, presents a highly attractive destination for Dominican tourists, who can now explore the country’s rich cultural and natural heritage with greater ease,” said Deputy Minister of Consular Affairs and Institutional Management, Fernando Pérez Cárdenas.

The visa exemption agreement is part of a broader effort by the Bolivian government to strengthen ties with countries in Central America and the Caribbean. Bolivia has been actively pursuing agreements and negotiations with various nations in the region throughout the year.

“This is a historic moment for both Bolivia and the Dominican Republic,” said Pérez. “By eliminating visa requirements, we are not only promoting tourism but also fostering closer economic and cultural ties between our two peoples.”

The agreement also reflects Bolivia’s commitment to regional integration. The country held the pro tempore presidency of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States (CELAC) in 2019, during which it prioritized initiatives to enhance cooperation and mobility within the region.
