Imagine the past week for the players and staff of the Cibao FC, the number one-ranked team in the Caribbean, according to some sources.
Saturday, 21 September 2024 play first of final two games against OyM FC. At the Pan-American Field in San Cristobal. Lose a 2-1 game. Go to Santo Domingo, sleep and take a plane to Panama, wait several hours, and then a plane to Trinidad and Tobago; arrive in dawn hours Monday. Rest, train, rest.
Tuesday evening, a match against Athletic Club Port of Spain for Concacaf Caribbean Cup, Group B lead. First half, down 2-0. Second half, a fantastic come-back and win 2-3. That night, they flew home.
About six members of the team belong to the Sub-23 team of Cibao, and on Thursday, 26 September they had to play, again in San Cristobal, against the Delfines. Leading the aggregate score 1-0, the kids from Cibao managed a 0-0 tie to win for the third consecutive year the U-23 championship.
On Saturday, 28 September the Cibao faced OyM once again, down 2-1 in the aggregate score. And they won the game, 3-1, and the championship!
This is the fourth-straight championship for the Cibao team and the fifth in their 10 years in the Dominican Football League.
But wait, there is more. Tomorrow, 1 October, the Cibao FC will face Ouanaminthe FC, one of Haiti’s top tier teams at the Cibao Stadium in Santiago. A win would give Cibao the top spot in Group B for the Caribbean Cup playoffs.
