Karl Anthony Towns to join NY Knicks; Announces construction of basketball facility in Santiago, hometown of his mom

NBA star Karl-Anthony Towns has announced a formal partnership with GO Ministries and World Youth Clubs to spearhead the construction of a state-of-the-art basketball facility in the Dominican Republic. The announcement comes at a time when it is reported that Towns has signed a deal to join the New York Knicks, bringing him closer to the Dominican community and to a NBA championship.

GO Ministries already has a major sports center in Tamboril, built by JMF Arquitectos, SRL, the firm of Architect Jose Mella. Mella has designed and built about half of the MLB baseball academies in the Dominican Republic.

Mella has designed the basketball facility to be funded by Towns. It will be a sports center for basketball and volleyball with capacity for 2,000 people, court and air conditioning, locker rooms, shops and bathrooms for the public. The facility will be in Tamboril, Santiago and will feature a full-sized indoor arena equipped with the latest in sports technology, training room and classroom as well as a community meeting space to host workshops and events that support holistic youth development.

The new facility is described as one that is designed to offer “unparalleled training and recreational opportunities for young athletes across the region.”

“I’m excited to partner with GO Ministries/WYC to create a facility where kids can play basketball and provide a platform to learn life skills, build character and pursue their dreams,” Towns has told the press. “The Dominican Republic has given me so much and this is my way of giving back.”

The New Jersey-born 7-foot tall Towns is a member of the Dominican national basketball team through his Dominican-born mother, the late Jacqueline Cruz who died of Covid-19 in April 2020.
