The Centro Leon is again playing a major role in the celebration of Christmas in Santiago, the country’s second-largest city.
The “My Neighborhood is Christmas” program at the Centro Leon encouraged neighborhoods to decorate for Christmas. Of 17 participating neighborhoods, the seven most beautiful were chosen and presented to an independent jury. The jury chose the top three and the center has organized guided tours to these so people can celebrate the local Christmas traditions. Over 700 people will tour the areas on 17 and 18 December to explore the stunningly decorated streets of these neighborhoods, now transformed into tourist attractions.
Ramón Paulino, president of the Santiago Tourism Cluster, highlighted the significance of “My Neighborhood is Christmas” not only as a celebration of Christmas traditions but also as an initiative that bolsters Santiago’s cultural profile. The city’s primary appeal lies precisely in its rich cultural heritage. Visitors can immerse themselves in local art and creativity while learning about the region’s values and traditions, he says, as reported in N Digital.
“Initiatives like ‘My Neighborhood is Christmas’ are essential for the growth of cultural tourism in our city. Santiago is a destination steeped in history, traditions, and a vibrant cultural identity. Programs like this position Santiago as a leading cultural tourism destination in the Dominican Republic,” stated Paulino.
The Santiago Tourism Cluster will continue to support and promote programs that strengthen the city’s cultural identity and attract visitors, establishing Santiago as a premier tourist destination for those seeking unique and authentic experiences.
Santiago is also the site of the Villa Navidad at the grounds of the Gran Teatro Regional Cibao and the Monumento. Villa Navidad, sponsored by the Presidency, is ongoing from 2 December through 6 January 2025. Live shows and events are programmed for each night from 6 to 10pm.
