Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez welcomes Leah Francis Campos’ nomination as US ambassador to the DR

Dominican Minister of Foreign Relations, Roberto Álvarez, expressed a positive view on the nomination of Leah Francis Campos as the new US ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

“We are very pleased that someone was nominated so quickly, and it seems she will receive full approval from the US Senate,” Álvarez said, speaking to the press on the occasion of the presentation of a new book (Dominican Diplomacy in the Face of the Haitian Crisis 2020-2024) on Dominican and Haitian diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Relations on 17 December 2024.

Álvarez said US President-elect Donald Trump needs to take office on 20 January 2025 before Campos’ appointment can be officially confirmed.

Álvarez was also asked about the possibility of Dominican President Luis Abinader being invited to Trump’s inauguration. The foreign minister confirmed that no formal invitation had been extended to Abinader as of yet.

“In general, only ambassadors are invited to these events in the United States. The invitation that President Trump extended to the President of China is an exception. Usually, only the diplomatic corps attends, not foreign heads of state,” Álvarez explained.
