Eduardo Estrella appointed as Minister of Public Works, replaces Deligne Ascencion

President Luis Abinader has appointed Eduardo Estrella as the new Minister of Public Works, replacing Deligne Ascención, who will vacate the position effective 26 February 2025. Ascención is a high-ranking government party politician who also serves as secretary of organization for the ruling Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM).

In the same decree naming Eduardo Estrella, Ascención is named minister without portfolio. Ascención had been highly criticized for his intense propaganda that advertised the completion of public works that were constantly being delayed.

Media sources indicate Estrella was appointed due to his experience in engineering and his background at the Ministry of Public Works. Estrella had served as deputy secretary of Public Works during the administrations of the late Joaquin Balaguer from 1986 to 1990, and then as secretary of Public Works from 1991-1994, leaving the position with high marks for works accomplished and a track record of honesty in the position. From 1990 to 1991 he served a short stint as executive director of the National Institute of Potable Water and Sewage. He subsequently was voted senator for the province of Santiago from 1994 to 1998.

Eduardo Estrella served as president of the Senate from 1994-1998 and from 2020 to 2024.
