
President Luis Abinader has appointed Roberto Ángel Salcedo as the new Minister of Culture. There had been abundant speculation on the appointment after the resignation of former Minister Milagros Germán, also from the showbusiness world.
Salcedo is the son of former long-time mayor of Santo Domingo, Roberto Salcedo (Esmerito Antonio Salcedo Gavilán), who was mayor of Santo Domingo 2002 to 2016 when he lost a bid for a fourth term to today Minister of Tourism David Collado.
Salcedo has had a career in the entertainment industry where he has worked as actor, comedian, producer and director for TV and movie productions.
He had been appointed in January 2023 to serve as director of the Presidential Strategic and Special Projects (Propeep) Agency, a division of the Presidency that carries out social and community initiatives and that had been mired by corruption cases in the past.
Salcedo holds a degree in Business Administration from the Ibero-American University (UNIBE), a master’s in Public Policy Management from George Washington University in the United States, and has studied Public Policy and State Modernization at the National Technological University of Buenos Aires, Argentina.
As the new head of the Ministry of Culture, Salcedo’s leadership is expected to focus on promoting national talent, strengthening the creative industries, and developing projects that ensure cultural access across the country.
President Abinader also appointed several vice ministers for the Ministry of Culture. These are Carmen Rossina Guerrero as vice minister for decentralization and national coordination at the Ministry of Culture. Likewise, Alice Baroni Bethancourt was appointed vice minister for cultural industries. Luis Amaury Sanchez, best known for his musicals and preparing of some of the country’s best emerging talents, was named vice minister for creativity and popular participation. And Luis Radhames Santos was named vice minister for development, innovation and cultural research.
