Imagine Sting singing in Spanish with Juan Luis Guerra? It has been released for public enjoyment. Two of the most famous musicians of the 20th and 21st centuries got together to sing a song in the native language of Guerra. Posted recently on YouTube, the video has more than 1.3 million views and 85,000 ‘likes.’
The bachata mixed with bolero song is a track from an album made by Juan Luis Guerra 35 years ago, called Bachata Rosa — Estrellitas and Duendes (Little Stars and Fairies). Back then it quickly became an international hit for Guerra and is considered one of his most emblematic songs.
The duet with music world powerhouse Sting was orchestrated by Sting’s manager Martin Kierszenbaum and Cherrytree Music Company. Sting told Billboard that Kierszenbaum, who is a Spanish-speaker “and, like me, a big admirer of Juan Luis’ compositions,” was who encouraged him to lend his voice to this classic by Guerra, “one of his favorites.”
Billboard reports that this is not their first collaboration. In 2006, Sting invited Guerra on stage during a concert at Altos de Chavón in La Romana, Dominican Republic, to perform “Fragile” together.
Juan Luis Guerra has received three Grammys and 31 Latin Grammys. Sting, as the leader of the musical group The Police, has received 17 Grammys, a Golden Globe and several Oscar nominations. Together these represent 50 years of musical excellence.
