Emergency closure of Ocoa Highway

The Ministry of Public Works (MOPC) has ordered the total temporary closure of the Ocoa-Cruce de Ocoa highway. The local traffic and transit agency Digesett is currently managing alternate routes while a provisional pass is constructed to restore connectivity.

On 18 April 2026, the Ministry of Public Works and Communications (MOPC) mandated the total and temporary closure of the Ocoa-Cruce de Ocoa highway following a significant geological failure. The collapse was classified as a major sinkhole (socavón). The sinkhole was precipitated by persistent heavy rainfall that destabilized the underlying limestone strata, a condition exacerbated by the region’s complex hydrological network.

The Transit Agency (Digesett) is redirecting traffic through narrow, secondary routes that were not designed for the heavy agricultural transport typical of the Ocoa region.

Engineers from the MOPC’s Rapid Response Unit are currently deploying pre-fabricated Bailey bridges to establish a provisional pass, while geotechnical assessments continue to determine if the surrounding roadway remains stable enough for a permanent reconstruction.
