Following his arrival from Puerto Rico as part of a regional tour that will also include Mexico, Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares began his official visit on Monday, 27 April 2026 by meeting with Spanish business leaders. Albares will meet with his counterpart, Roberto Alvarez on Tuesday at the Ministry of Foreign Relations.
The diplomatic mission is conducted in reciprocity to the meeting held by both ministers in Madrid in May 2025, serving to follow up on the work commitments agreed upon on that occasion.
The Ministry of Foreign Relations explains that both foreign ministers will hold a high-level working meeting to review preparatory works for the Ibero-American Summit in Madrid, scheduled for 4 and 5 November 2026, under the theme “Ibero-America. Together we build our community. Together we project it towards the future and the world.”
The official agenda also includes a visit to a cooperation project sponsored by the Spanish Agency for International Development Cooperation (AECID) and a joint press conference to disclose details of the bilateral matters discussed during the session.
The Dominican Republic and Spain maintain long-standing diplomatic relations and a robust cooperation agenda in areas of common interest, framed within a continuous and respectful institutional dialogue. Economic ties remain a priority, as Spain led Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the Dominican Republic last year with US$1.09 billion, maintaining a leading position in the hospitality sector.
The Spanish minister is accompanied by the Secretary of State for Ibero-America and the Caribbean, Susana Sumelzo; the Ambassador of Spain to the Dominican Republic, Lorea Arribalzaga among other high-ranking officials.
