Spanish foreign minister visits, talks center on trade, migration, and regional stability

Foreign Minister Roberto Álvarez and his Spanish counterpart, José Manuel Albares, reaffirmed their nations’ commitments to bilateral cooperation, trade, and investment during an official diplomatic visit this week. The high-level meeting emphasized the reciprocal support for their respective diaspora communities and the deep-seated cultural links between the two countries.

In a joint press conference, the diplomats underscored the socio-economic impact of the migration corridors between the Caribbean nation and the Iberian Peninsula.

Migration and community integration
Minister Álvarez highlighted the scale of the Dominican diaspora in Spain, noting that it represents the second-largest Dominican community abroad. “More than 200,000 of our compatriots reside in Spain,” stated the Dominican Foreign Minister. “We sincerely appreciate the welcome extended to our people, who today actively contribute to the economic, social, and cultural life of that country.”

Minister Albares, representing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union, and Cooperation of Spain, reciprocated by acknowledging the full integration of Dominican citizens. He further announced a significant legislative shift regarding their legal status.

Albares confirmed that Spain has launched a regularization process for those already living in the country. The initiative aims to recognize the legal rights of thousands of residents, facilitating their formal contribution to Spanish social and economic development.

Diplomatic agenda and regional security
The bilateral discussions served as a precursor to upcoming major international forums. Minister Albares delivered a formal invitation to President Luis Abinader to participate in the 30th Ibero-American Summit, scheduled for November 2026 in Madrid.

The meeting also addressed the ongoing crisis in Haiti. Spain reaffirmed its commitment to international stabilization efforts, aligning with the Dominican Republic’s persistent calls for global intervention and support for its neighboring nation.
