Major flooding in Jarabacoa

As reported, heavy rains fell and the flooding was worsened when garbage blocked the flow of the gushing waters of the Yaque del Norte River in Jarabacoa causing major damages to homes in the community of Manabao. Listin Diario reports that rocks, broken pavement and garbage flooded inhabited areas.

Inhabitants told Listin Diario reporters that they had many material losses and that they had never seen “something like this.”

“The waters took everything. Refrigerator, stove, bed… I had to take refuge with a brother of mine and my 9 and 17 year old children,” said Elba María Rodríguez, one of those affected by the flood in the El Fogón sector. Around 40 dwellings were affected and 15 family homes were seriously damaged by the heavy flooding.

Around 400 meters of the Manabao mountain road paving was damaged.

Luisa Jimenez de la Mota, governor of La Vega, said that food aid and other items are being made available for the affected persons in Manabao. “We are completing the assessment with the Civil Defense and firefighters to be able to say the exact numbers of families and houses affected,” said the governor.

Hoy reports four bridges were damaged. The Ministry of Public Works acted promptly to restore vehicular crossing of the bridges over Arroyo Grande and Don Bolívar that were damaged by the overflooding of the waters of the Manabao River.

More rains are forecast. Provinces with weather warnings are: Santiago, San Juan, Hato Mayor, Santiago Rodríguez, La Vega, El Seibo, Monte Plata, Dajabón, Azua, Monseñor Nouel and Sánchez Ramírez.
