The Dominican Republic exported 41,174,765 dozen of textile items in the first seven months of the current year, a 15% increase when compared to the same period in 1995, according to a report by the Consejo Nacional de Zonas Francas (CNZF). Last year the same category of exports numbered 35,765,186 dozen.

The ex-minister of tourism, Frank Jorge Elias, has said that the mixed fund created for the promotion of tourism abroad will total US$3.8 million by the end of the year. Eduardo Fernández, a former Central Bank governor, considers that the next government’s economic policy should give priority to the promotion of visible exports. He said that the next government should stop the progressive decrease in this export category.

The agricultural sector remains the country’s largest employer, as it uses 48% of the country’s labour force, generating 65% of visible exports, excluding the free zones, and contributing 15% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The commercial banks bought US$641.1 million and sold US$622.9 million during the period January to May of the current year. This was revealed in the last bulletin of economic indicators published by the Central Bank.
