The Meritorious Students’ Awards were presented yesterday by President Leonel Fernandez at the Presidential Palace. During the ceremony, 342 students and 18 teachers were commended for their extra efforts. Diario Libre reports that eleven-year-old Maxiel Elizabeth Garcia, from Santiago, obtained the highest academic score with a 99.77 average.

The Ministry of Public Health has opened a mental health community center in Gualey with the purpose of providing advice to residents there regarding psycho-social and labor problems. Diario Libre reports that the center is being supported by Spanish “Ramon Rey Ardid Foundation” and is operating in the City Hall’s community center.
