Are you guys really this stupid?? You think that a multinational company like Hard Rock is not gonna invest the necessary money on making a stable earthquake resistant 40 stories building??

Also, i believe Criss Colon was actually joking, theres no way any big hotel/company is gonna make a huge luxury hotel in the middle of the most comunist country in the world any time soon. Not even with the re-opening of diplomatic relations with USA. Big investers are not stupid at all!!

Ditto, specially since the area around Havana is earthquake free. I hate to think what will happen to all those tall buildings here when another major one gets to take place, like it did on the years 1842, 1946, and more recently, 2010.

Funny, never heard of a building collapsing in Santo Domingo during the earthquake of 2010.

Well, a 40 story building is going to take four years. I have worked on several dozen of them. From ground breaking to closing and being used will be 4 years minimum unless they know something builders in Miami don't.

Yeah actually they do know something most of you seem to not know, building in DR is much cheaper than in Miami, and a hell of a lot less burocratic. Building in DR is a piece of cake compared to building in Miami. Although, contrary to popular belief in this forum, the dominican state is very very strict when it comes to sismic regulations, basically every single building over 5 stories in DR is built under serious anti-sismic guidelines.

Naked Probably meant earthquake on the Island, 2010 was centered around Port-Au-Prince.

Trust me, an earthquake that size in Santo Domingo wouldn't cause even close to the amount of damage it caused in Port Au Prince.

Actually, if anything, most houses would be collapsed and the only surviving building with absolutely no damage would be the ones taller than 5 floors.

Bottom line, the taller the building, the safer it really is.

They are investing money under the new turism law, this law before was only good for La Altagracia and congress changed to cover whole country, and also the area for turism proporsal in Santo Domingo also was extended. Thats why now they are looking at Santo Domingo as a potential city to develop more the turism.

That looks like a really nice A+ project. Before a press release like that financing is usually already lined up.
BTW that building will surpass what the code in the DR is. You can't finance, build and insure a project like that
if the engineering is not top shelf. There are instances in a building boom where mistakes are made, like in Dubai
where many of the high rise buildings have an exterior cladding conducive to burning.

I spend allot of time in the Hardrock Casino here in PC. It's first class. I love that hotel massive air conditioned lobby walk for hours in that place. Free drinks in the casino. Free food coupon for the deli. Mind you I'm gambling. I have no doubt the new HR in SD will be the top hotel in the Country.

I've been going to Varadero since 1992. We use to stay at this hotel called the TUXPAN. It was attached to the Playboy Club. Cuba is great always felt safe there. But I still prefer the DR for other reasons and I bought here.

No one has yet told me whare the **** from 5 million people goes in santo Domingo.

And before you say anything about DR also being a cheap all inclusive destination, tourism in DR has been slowly shifting towards a much more upscale audience since around 2007. Nowadays every single multinational hotel being built in DR are more upper scale or luxury hotels and most old cheap all inclusive hotels are being remodeled or demolished to build another hotel that is bigger and more luxurious. Only in Santo Domingo in a couple of years we have now JW Marriot, Embassy Suites, and a new huge hotel that is almost finished in Av. Churchill called Hotel Real Intercontinental, which is another luxurious hotel. Ohh and i forgot about the expansion of the JW marriot that will start its construction I think in march or april and also contemplates the expansion of Blue Mall called "Blue Mall II" Here it is:

And don't even make me begin with Punta Cana.

The problem is that some people in this forum think that the DR of 2016 is the same DR of 2000-2005 and thats not true, things have changes enormously in the past 10 years and tourism is only going up and im talking about rich tourism, not lower middle class all inclusive like it was back in the 90's and the first half of the 2000's.

I think the majority of the guests of these high end hotels in Santo Domingo are business people and not tourists. What tourist would like to be in Av. Lincoln.

"And don't even make me begin with Punta Cana." What level of arrogance would it take to make a statement like this? Nobody here is making you do anything.

Maybe the quality of the stay has changed but has construction of the buildings? Always seem to hear about such and such hotel closed for?????

The Same kind of turist that visit Mexico City, Bogota or any other city in the world, there is a very big group of people that do not want to come and burn in the Sun, that is intrested in Culture - Colonial Zone first city build by european in America, ton of restaurants, etc., that kind of people that love the city is the one will stay in those hotels and also business people too.
