The Same kind of turist that visit Mexico City, Bogota or any other city in the world, there is a very big group of people that do not want to come and burn in the Sun, that is intrested in Culture - Colonial Zone first city build by european in America, ton of restaurants, etc., that kind of people that love the city is the one will stay in those hotels and also business people too.

culture is hard to find in Santo Domingo, except for the ZC. But than it's better to stay in ZC or Malecon.

Plaza de la Cultura in Maximo Gomez Av. you can find there part of the Museums we have in Santo Domingo like Modern Art Musseum, Dominican Musseum, and some others, all the rest are in the Colonial Zone. So is not so hard.

Are you guys really this stupid?? You think that a multinational company like Hard Rock is not gonna invest the necessary money on making a stable earthquake resistant 40 stories building??

Also, i believe Criss Colon was actually joking, theres no way any big hotel/company is gonna make a huge luxury hotel in the middle of the most comunist country in the world any time soon. Not even with the re-opening of diplomatic relations with USA. Big investers are not stupid at all!!

WANNA BET???????????????
100'S OF HOTELS built/managed, ALL OVER THE WORLD, I bet they have some in "Burma".
Few hotels are "built" by the company who's name goes on the roof.
They just manage the hotels.

Still, in this case there's a franchise kind of business going on, which means that they inspect the work and the hotel must be done under their specifications even if you're the one putting the money. Thats how franchises work.

Totally on the contrary, culture is everywhere in Santo Domingo. Even in the campo, you are surrounded by culture everywhere, from the architecture of the houses, to the guy selling fruits in the corner, and the mulata girl with rolos doing chores in the front porch while dancing to the bachata that is playing from the colmado and people playing domino and drinking jumbo. Culture is literally everywhere here. And yes, most of these hotels are dedicated to business travelers, but thats a type of tourism too!! And thats not even bad, that means that there's alot of money and business going on, because if the demand is so high that it requires so many new GIANT hotels that are NOT ALL INCLUSIVE and they all are almost always highly booked, that means that alot of business is being done here and alot of money is coming in too!! But haters are still gonna hate and always hope for the worst to happen, like these buildings collapsing for example.

The nightlife is also very active in the capital. So basically you can last at least 2 or 3 days in the city before getting bored.

Not only is CC correct, but they do not even manage the hotels. The owner does. I will tell you a secret. The HR gets 2% of the gross. And it is a ton of money every year.

You should read before responding, a couple of comments ago i said this:

Bottom line, the construction of this hotel is anti-seismic and no, a huge luxurious Hard Rock Hotel in Havana is not remotely viable!! Maybe a small Hard Rock Cafe, but not a huge luxury casino and hotel. Thats the pinacle of capitalism in the middle of a highly comunist country. Not posible, at least not for now. You guys are just forcing your arguments at this point!!

What I mean is culture interesting enough for tourists. I've visited several museums in santo Domingo and had a good time but it's nothing compared to what the average finds in their own country or most other countries. DR is just not a destination for cultural inclined tourists.

Same on entertainment though, I went to Ocean World early January and felt sorry for the tourists that have to pay USD69 for 4 shows in a park of maybe 2500m2 (besides two of the shows were literally the same as when I went their many years ago when it just opened.

DR is a beach destination and maybe some mountain / Eco tourism , but visiting DR for the culture or entertainment parks, no.

I like La Isabela near Luperon which is supposedly the first place Christopher Columbus arrove. Not much there to see, but if one is into history etc it is cool.

If DR is such an uninteresting place to you then why the **** are you even in this page?? Forget it, I don't even care!! I have an even better question for you; why do so many people visit Jamaica for their culture, being ours many times more rich?? The first of everything in the america's is here. The story of the american continent starts here, is that not interesting enough for you?? As far as museums, apart from the ones you have in Zona Colonial, the Faro a Colon is a really really good place to go, you would be surprised by the amount of relics and history that is inside there.

No im not virgo, im just a normal dominican who gets irritated when seeing the bull**** some people come up with here. I just think that this page has way too many DR haters. I heard that the administrator of the page dominicanwatchdog.org has an account in DR1. Doesn't surprise me at all!!

Thats not THE START of the American continent.

Maybe people have valid reasons to dislike the DR?
