Following this thread, returned to Sully. We were three. Ordered a Caldereta that they say is for two people. ASked them not to include the potatoes and change mero basa for dorado. The stew was delicious. Not much dorado inside but delicious. Had it with rice, instead of the potatoes. This is one of the best value soups in town. We filled up, and there was enough for another two persons. It was RD$1,100 plus taxes, so at about RD$250 per person, it is great value.

They have another fish soup, the Cazuela. The waiter insisted it was only one portion. It costs around RD$650. From what I remember, the cazuela is enough to fill two people.

The same happens at Iberia, the Spanish restaurant off Privada in western Santo Domingo. They serve a cazuela there that they say is for two but is enough for six persons, too. This was more a soup, than a stew (Sully's).

Regarding Cantabrico… I grew up going to Cantabrico on the Independencia. But they are pricey. Recently visited the new branch at Silver Sun Mall. It was good, but nothing special.

The Vesuvio on the Malecon made a name for its great seafood dishes. Remember their Pulpo a la Luciana, their Spaghetti Fradiavolo. The Vesuvio was affected by being the first of the good restaurants. The staff that was the same for years and years needed to get raises (could not be fired because of the very high severance payments), costs increased, they had to give cuts to the tour operators and taxis, etc. So their costs kept increasing, but then tough competition came at a time when it became less fashionable to go to the Malecon… This resulted in raising prices at a time when they have to compete. Have not been back in years… would think the food is the same. As their promotion always stated, Vesuvio is a Dominican tradition.

Thanks Dolores, when I first visited the DR a couple of us took two females we had met who worked at the embassy to dinner I was impressed,
impressed enough to remember the waiters name as Chepe (Maybe that is simply a word for waiter but I recalled him every time I returned
he would literally meet me on the sidewalks and escort me to a table) The steaks were super, seafood and Italian as well
The most amazing for the kids was that desert cart, it had to be 6 feet tall and at least 8x8 around every imaginable item and all so rich

we went another time and one of the girls had scheduled something with two little 7-8 year old girls she sort of "fostered" part
time they had no idea what to order so we ordered a pasta dish and they loved it, twice as the waiter saw how "enthused"
they were and brought seconds when the desert cart came, oh my god I don?t think these young ladies had seen anything
like it and had no idea what to do they didn't know if they could have anything then maybe everything was for them we explained
and if you have seen that cart you can imagine what a little girl from poor section of town must have thought of the very fancy
items Good ole Chepe came over and told them in Spanish to take what they wanted, they did, about 8 deserts each We started to tell
them to select only one item and Chepe intervened saying something like "let them enjoy their night" Chepe
cheerfully boxed them up, did not charge us and another good night was had

Been since 1996 or so since I have been back, same thing but it was a little "empty" in the past there was always a line
even though they took reservations, that was a place where tipping the waiters paid off hope it is still doing well

It was priced on the high end compared to other restaurants I had experienced in the area but the food, service and atmosphere was worth it

I agree with bigbird. Most seafood is not particularly cheap. Cantobrico is good but very overpriced. Grilled fish is a good buy but you don't really know where the fish came from. Shrimp, lobster, mussels tend to be expensive. Various forms of Octopus are reasonable. [pulpo]
