i think body's limits can be pushed further than a small difference of temperatures delivered by sauna.
have you heard about cryogenic cabins? the body gets exposed to the temperatures as low as -190 degrees celsius for up to 3 minutes. if your heart can take that then surely little sauna heat is no challenge...

we have one of those here in Sosua. It is called Playero....

If Dominicans really do believe in this pasmo old wives tale, how to explain their fondness for pumping the aircon up to arctic levels in supermarkets, cinemas, banks, restaurants, bedrooms and buses?

I think it is more prevalent in the rural areas where there are no supermarkets, cinemas, restaurants and banks and the bedrooms and buses don't have aircon!

What would amaze me though, was when I had a colmado, construction workers would come in sweating, ask me to open the fridge and get them a coca cola as they would die if they did it, and then ask for a big cup of ice, pour in the coca cola and drink it straight down! It obviously is only true for cold on the outside and not the inside.

so they do not suffer from "freeze brain"? I hope that is the right phrase, where your brain starts to hurt real bad when you guzzle down an icecold drink or some icecream...

It is very common here and most believe that if you expose your body to cold after being hot then you will die, or be at risk of death. This would include opening the fridge after ironing, or whilst sweating. However like many superstitions there is some basis in fact as going from heat to cold can cause shock and even death as sudden change to cold water constricts the blood vessels and can affect the heart. When I was a diving instructor in the Mediterranean where the water is much colder than here, we would always advise divers to put their wrists into the cold water before diving off the boat, especially if they had been in the sun for a while. I doubt that opening the fridge after ironing would have the same effect, but I can see where it comes from.

HAHAHA........too funny. We used to go to a hot springs after skiing, the outside. temp usually -10-20c. The hot springs were hotter than a bathtub. There was a little pool beside the springs that was .05c. We used to soak in the warm springs then jump into the ice pool. Nobody ever croaked.
To keep this DR related, to the best of my knowledge there are no ski hills in the DR.

Like dv8 and others have said, this is total bull sh!t...nothing else.

I have posted on this at least twice. A lot of this started with the introduction of electricity, and ungrounded house wiring.

Forget Finland...think about NYC in the winter and leaving a hot apt, going out into those -15 C. windchill winds, then down into the subway and all those hot sweaty cars, and then back up onto those frozen streets and then into a sweatshop to work 10 hours. And then back home. And there has NEVER, EVER been a report of any Dominican suffering from a " spasmo" in NYC..

Total bull crap...but, hey, I can cure it if you pay met...heh ehe hehe

Another funny thread started from a guy who supposedly is 26 years old has more than US$100k in US dollar backed bank accounts in DR but little less than US$1Million dollars worth of Dominican Pesos in DR banks. built his house in La Vega 4 years ago LOL. What does he do for a living? Its probably inherited mommy and daddy money, ex-MLB draft pick, or money from the black market (illegal activities to put it bluntly). Common guys how believable does this seem to be? LOL, many times I've been in hot/cold temperatures or environments had a sudden temperature change and nothing has gone wrong. That is hogwash and total superstition.

I own an internet marketing company that caters to US businesses looking to increase their internet presence through email marketing, SEO, and media buys. Not sure how this is relevant to this thread though, are successful people not allowed to go to the campo? Considering my family owns coffee fincas in Ranchos de la vaca in jarabacoa, I'm not going to stop seeing them because I've worked my ass off to become successful. Next.

Am I the only person in the world who had never had this happen???? I get a sharp pain in the esophagus instead, I have to double over to stop it.

My suegra never lived a day in the campo, she was born in La Feria [SD] when it was her parents' farm, and she believed in the whole ironing/fridge thing. I always told my husband I could have written a book based on all her beliefs.

Remember the father in "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and his windex? That was her - with Vicks 'mentol'

OOOHHH How I love this one.

My wife ( Dominican )
Says the same thing.

Yea I'm going to die from going from hot to cold.

Open fridge when returning from gym.

Ironing another great one.

And lets not forget that Dominicans melt in the rain.

About seven years ago.
My wife and I went to a resort in PP she wanted to go to the casino.
I said we have no money to waste on gambling.
She said no problem . We can just look around.
So nice nite we walked . Left the kid at the room.

We walked around some and she asks me for some money .
What are you nuts .
So she says lets go back to the room.

No sooner than we start walking back here comes the rain. A down pour.

I NEVER LET GO OF HER HAND

The entire way , best walk of my life.

We haven't been to a casino since.

actually there is some truth to it.

here in the dr the rain has so much stuff in it that if you go in the rain when hot you can get grippe and die. so its best to stay in the dry or cool off a little and let your pores close.

also matilda,

on 'our' boat we disconnected the compressor from the water cooler so that the water was ambient temperature, when the guys took a drink before jumping in, to reduce the risk of spasms in the chest and heart area.

sayonora, respect to you, I am trying to learn some of that stuff. It's a minefield.

Share more myths guys .. here's one that's not a myth but a common phrase in La Vega .. "Si Dios quiere" , almost like they can have no influence on what's going to happen.

It would make sense if more of them were devout churchgoers but the majority aren't. I asked my friend in his last year of medical school if he was going to finish next year, and he says "Si Dios quiere". Hm

OLd Irish phrase starts:

"If I should live until I die..... and I expect I shall....."

In English, we say " God willing"...... very often in some circles.

This is a VERY normal phrase/saying in many cultures

NOT a myth that needs to be "Debunked"

I'm pretty certain the correct term is "espasmo/espasmAR".

This is a common myth here as it doesn't not appear to be based on science given the multiple first aid training I've had over the years. I attribute it to the power of suggestion and the mind, in other words people here believe being hot and then being exposed to cold air or water will hurt them and thus their mind cause their mouth to spasm(typical symptom).

In fact when I first moved here my extended family through the wife tried to prevent me from doing it and even used to watch me run the hose over my head after doing exercises or running in the middle of the day waiting for me to go crazy. In the end they gave up. My wife still believes in it - for her anyway, jeje. My father in law and a couple of cu?ados no longer believe in it and seem to be much happier when it really gets hot. :)

I've also talked to at least one doctor about this who believed in it. There is a supposed injection to prevent this from happening that many women who work in salons take. I expect it is just salt water. :) Such is the power of the mind.

Chip, maybe there is another reason they have stopped waiting for you to go crazy. ;)
