most of the land in Haiti belongs to the State

but then most of the land in Haiti is mountains

The State of Haiti took some land from some small farmers up in Wanamet to build the Groupo M factory

there was an international uprising from the LEFT

boycotting Levis.. internationally.. as they had a contract with Groupo M

They boycotted in London and in San Francisco

The factory has an entrance on the DR side.. but most of it is in fact on Haitian land. .No one would Hatian after the riots under Aristide had destroyed the factories. They were only willing to invest if the Dominican military could protect it. Well Groupo M is Dominican but the project was done with a World Bank loan.

the Left raised an uproar about exploitation about taking of fertile farm land etc etc etc etc

The factory employs 1500 Haitians.. actually the largest employer in Ouanaminthe

that was the use of eminent domain

i am for it.,. yes.

but then in your country the people who own so called "private" property are really just leasing it from the state or maybe you live in a state with no property taxes? and maybe your state will not confiscate your property if you do not pay your taxes. That is how it works in all of the places that I have lived in the US but your states might be different

MA, thanks to your recommendation I'm finally reading Jonathan Katz's book. It's quite the eye-opener, even as someone who thought I knew Haiti and the international aid sector there pre-2010 reasonably well.

For those who might wish to donate..

I can recommend any of the following organizations based on the following

All are in Haiti, led by Haitians, and do not have foreign offices
All are non sectarian
All are dedicated to uplifting the lives of the small farmers in the rural areas
All have been recommended to me by more than two Haitians who are very involved in development and whose opinions I value

One may suit one's personal values more than another

I put them in the order as they come to my mind

3. Extr?me pointe Ouest, de Tiburon ? J?r?mie : d?g?ts mat?riels importants routes, maisons, r?coltes en majeure partie d?truites, 5 gros villages de p?cheurs pratiquement inexistants (L?Ilet, Embouchure Malette, Rousselin, Lailler, Bariadelle et Petite Rivi?re )
6. M?me histoire ? Duchity, Beaumont, etc? Corail assi?g?e par les vagues. R?coltes de caf? ?
? Dantesque ! ? m?a rapport? Jean-Claude Fignol?
Ouest a ?t?
