more and more Haitians both on the ground and in the diaspora are asking us NOT to give money to ANY international aid groups based on how little impact the international groups had after the earthquake and the hurricane.

The most effective medical group on the ground in Haiti is Partners in Health http://www.pih.org

I have met people who have worked with them and they report that the group is extremely well run, it both employs and trains many Haitian doctors.

I ask that you call, Chiri, as I fear that my vocabulary or my deaf ear will fail me just when I need them the most. Donations can be destabilizing. After the quake, they were accepting all and everything but this is more localized and they may be only asking for medicines or the like..

It is probably better not to send things - I was reading about the way the well-intentioned donations of supplies snarled up the system, fell into the wrong hands, or were unsuitable anyway. After the earthquake we sent boxes of non-perishable foods like canned sardines and beans, I hope they did get to people who really needed them.

Here is one organisation that works in the Jeremie area*http://hhfoundation.wpengine.com/

Also worth following this and seeing their realtime updates*https://www.facebook.com/EffectiveAidHaiti/
Their pinned post is being updated with a list of local organisations:
FUNDRAISING: Those of us with long experience in Haiti want to ensure assistance is getting where it is needed. We are compiling a list of organizations whose work on the ground we have direct experience with.
This list is incomplete but we will update as we get in contact with local organizations and help them set up fundraising channels. If you have a suggestion send a PM with contact information. Each of these organisations is based / established in the affected communities and on the ground right now providing critical support. 100% of funds donated will go to people affected by the Hurricane.

NOTE PLEASE

UNLESS your group is a REGISTERED NGO in HAITI all donations will most likely be TAXED at the border or the airport

This is simply going to happen

Do not get up in arms over this

Send the money to the proper Haitian groups so that they can buy the goods in Haiti

Or pay the appropriate taxes on imported goods from the Dominican Republic
