Government provides free college assistance for the poor. I think it is a great thing.
This turns around and bites the middle class in the behind.

As colleges continues to raise tuition fees, taxes contineus to go up on working class.
At the same time, the working class has to pay for its own eduation... a financial lose , lose situation.

Here's a test of how well the US education system is doing (for those of you who live here). Open up the yellow pages in just about any major city in the country and go through the listing for physicians. You will find, depending on the city anywhere from 1/3 - 2/3 of the listed names which you cannot properly pronounce. Graduates of medical schools from countries with social education systems come to the US to practice medicine where the eastablished rates for routine procedures are obscenely higher than in their home countries.

We're seeing similar results in the engineering fields and if we continue to deny quality education to home grown students it won't be long before you can't properly pronounce the names of any of the providers. I guess it's okay though, somebody's got to keep their Benzes and Beemers running.

I hear far too many people complaining about paying taxes who made less money last year than I actually paid in taxes like somebody's taking something away from them without providing any quality of life value for it. These people should travel more and see how much they've taken for granted all these years. The biggest reason for the great political divide in the US is most Americans' ignorance of the World around them or in many cases outside a 50 mile radius of where they live their entire lives.

Yes it's an income redistribution program. What happens if you drop dead at 58? Does this insurance program give your estate or your heirs a dime of what you put in?

The Social Security tax is a single flat rate on the first $100,000 or so of wages. Yet the benefits for lower income people represent a higher percentage of the money they actually earned during their lifetime.

Someone born in 1980 waiting until full retirement age.
If he made $15,000 a year his whole life he would receive $810 a month or 64% of his previous income

If he made $35,000 a year his whole life he would receive $1301 a month or 44% of his previous income

If he made $85,000 a year his whole life he would receive $2200 a month or 31% of his previous income

yet in all three examples he pays the same the same single tax rate for Social Security on every penny of the money he made in his lifetime.

It falls under the most basic definition of a Ponzi scheme. Social Security is dependent on future contributors in order to pay benefits, rather than any financial gains earned on the years of payments the beneficiary contributed. A Ponzi scheme is an investment program that pays investors with the contributions of future investors rather than any actual profit earned by the organization from the investors contributions
All true. BUT it was sold when it passed that each person would have an "account" for old age. And the deduction was very tiny. Additionally the actuarial tables at the time showed an average death at around 65...when "full" retirement benefits were supposed to kick in.

But still, it's not a pure wealth transfer; it is just a s#!tty annuity: Die young and you had a crap investment. Die old and you did OK.

The public schools have become laboratories for social engineering. Actual education is secondary. Another problem is that schools are now teaching standardized tests. Teach the test, pass the test. Funding has become attached to test results. Public education has gotten royally screwed up in this county.

I don't recall stating that the US education system was doing fabulously. I simply stated that college education is free for the poor. The US wuold not pay for a 8+ years medical career. :(

I am glad your life is wonderful and you plenty of money. That is always good. I don't envy people making tons of money. Why? I simply have aspiration.

This is where I don't agree with you on taxes:
Taxes in the US, specially for property, they never stop going up.

How do you explain that since the big mortgage meltdown, property value are in decline. Yet, property taxes continue to go up? ... That is the taxation without representation that I am talking bout....

I am sorry I can't look outside the US.. The US government is the one putting the tax burden on me to **** it away.... :(

If you think that Obama is taking this country down a Socialist path......Look at Clinton's record.. He helped everyone and balanced the budget. And what did the Republicans do??????? Made us go broke. Surplus to deficit in two shakes of a dogs tail.

It's hardly as simple as that.

I'm curious: care to explain the role Congress has played in both instances?

My property taxes went down along with the value of my house. Maybe I'm the only one?

It's hardly as simple as that.

The Democrats have been spinning the "Clinton balanced the budget" nonsense.
In a documentary, from a left wing statation or what is the NYT? Well, I don't recall the media source.

The piece was on Clinton's balanced budget.
A person stated the following: "Clinton balanced the budget using Social Security funds!"
This statement was not rebutted by the panelists.

Politicians are always pulling stunts like this...

Are you not a citizen? If you are you have representation. If not, work towards being a voter. But if you really lack an education you may not understand that the phrase 'taxation without representation' actually has meaning.

Yes, I am being represented by our glorious politicians the same way you are being represented back home!

Do you think your opinions have no bias? There are many Democrats on this site, and most of the Europeans on this site agree with the Democrats, except the smart ones.

Dear Original Poster,

Thank you for making this post.

Reading the responses from some of the members on this board has really helped solidify for me how little education most Americans have about what socialism actually is or means.

This lack of knowledge definitely puts into perspective people's opinions about what they think DR should be or why they don't or do enjoy living in DR...

Gracias!

Totally opposite from what you think.

Most are non-Dominicans, many Americans, and if American have a definite left bias.

Most Americans define 'left' and 'right' by what they hear on Fox News or Rush Limbaugh, or what the 80's taught them.
That dichotomy is stale and broken. In America, most European Conservatives are pussies. lol. just sayin...

From what I understand of European Conservatives they are further left than Obama is.

Oh, baloney.

You have no idea what folks think who listen to Fox News. You're just told from someone else who is equally clueless.

You don't listen to Fox. You are told what to think.
