It will be interesting to see the final results of this new highway to paradise. Without being very scientific, when the first part of the toll road opened up we really only saw an increase of fancy vehicles on party weekends and a lot more drunks on the beaches. Now that the final leg opened up without much fanfare there are a few more hotel buses visible but really the down-town did not suddenly get more congested, the restaurants are still not requiring reservations and there are still lots of empty slots in hotel parking lots. When all those new flights arrive into El Catey will there be some serious private transportation or just a lot more AI buses lined up? If you have new open access to the most beautiful beaches in the world, will they come, who is they, will they bring money to spend and what will they do when they get here? I think I miss paradise already!

The whole Samana infastructure may be just a folly, albeit an expensive one.

Only time will tell.

A wonderful, underutilised airport.
However many miles/kilometers of new pavement linking the area to the capital and SDQ.

Samana is there for those who want it. Now very accessible.

Good Place for a Cemetary

We drove on some areas where huge piles of dirt was being moved around going to Colson a month or so ago. Has that area been finished? Paved?
Yes, asphalted all the way.

Where is the tollbooth in LT?
There is none. (At least I have not seen one...)

Has the intersection with the main road been improved and marked?
I am not sure which intersection you mean.
The one where the "USA colmado" is (just opposite the petrol station) is the most critical one.
They put FOUR stop signs there, so nobody seems to have priority. ;)

The town road leading out of town (to S?nchez) now has three lines of bulky steel nails on the right lane where it crosses the 'boulevard'....
Well, the town needs another cemetary anyway....

Susan:

Yes, they will see a stop sign on their right about 50'from the corner. On the corner is a small market. They take a left and immediately they will see the Esso Station on their right and then just follow into town.

Now we have 2 corners.
Gordon meant the corner at Reysa's SM.
S obviously is talking about the intersection 'boulevard' x 'mountain road'.

Anyway, I believe, Susan knows exactly how to guide her GUESTS TO HER RENTAL PLACE. :bunny:

Mission completed.

Hi:
Boy, I thought you guys would have become a little more patient living here in the DR. The new highway, El Catey Airport, new business' all take time to develop. The next step is the up grade in the radar system at El Catey, which will allow flights from the US to begin utilizing the airport. There are already plans in the works for development of Playa Jackson and other areas between El Catey and Las Terrenas. This will hopefully create jobs for local residents and improve the overall quality of life. The President called it the Monte Carlo of the Carribean however I don't see any large Casinos yet, but as always be careful what you wish for.

LTSteve:

How long does it take from the first toll booth @ El Catay to the main road going through LT?
How lond did it take the old route from El Catay to the same spot in LT?
Does the new road connect with the main drag in LT at the road going to Colson/Playa Bonito?

And although we've driven it often, how long is the trip from the road toward El Limon/LT in Samana City to the Colson/Playa Bonito intersection in LT?

From the El Catey toll to the Calle principal in Las Terrenas - 20/25 mins.
On the old road up & over - 45 mins.
The new road joins the Calle Principal in Las Terrenas a bit farther south than the Coson road, it's at the intersection of the old Sanchez/Las Terrenas road where there is the Esso bomba station.
From the El Limon/Las Terrenas turn off in Samana city it's about 40 +/- mins to Las Terrenas.

The toll booth is now open on the new stretch and is 450.00 Rd$ from El Catey to Las Terrenas, I did it last Sunday (it was free) and it took 12 minutes from the toll booth to Coson.

trust this helps.

Expensive Entry to Saman?

... 450.00 Rd$ from El Catey to Las Terrenas, I did it last Sunday (it was free)...

Yes, and this is why there was a lot of traffic coming into LT last weekend. ;)
My friend (who lives at a strategic point to observe this) said he had never seen so many posh and expensive SUV's...
Now the toll fee (quite hefty, IMO) will help to reduce this influx. :bunny:

More will now again use the mountain road (which was just redone) and they will bring all their food and beverages from SD and STGO... leaving the garbage behind in LT.
Few will benefit from this.

Remember, the original Balcones de Atlantico is totally high end SDQ'ers.

They were on to LT before the SDQ-Nagua toll road was open.

Gee, I wonder how they knew what the plans for LT were ?? Small world, huh?

oops too many big fingers and too small keys
yes Don, I think you are right
maybe one can also suggest charging by the number of passengers on a moto if they want to pay off the road quicker

I think you are wrong.
Dominican that are going to use that road, are not the same Dominicans that goes to Boca Chica.
We dont car to pay 450pesos, if that will save us time. (I did the trip last week in 1.25hr)
We dont need to bring food or beverage to the beach. if We can pay Santo Domingo prices, LT is a bargain for us.
You should be grateful for the arrivals of Dominicans to LT. that will increase your house value.
Do you think all these work that had been made in LT, would be done if not were for the wealthy and influential Dominicans?
Wealthy Dominicans in LT means: more safety, better infraestructure and services, quality restaurants and bars, a clean family town and the more important, free of whores.
you dont believe me? Go to Bayahibe or La Romana
