I asked you in a PM recently but maybe it slipped: Are the orphans all girls? So no need for boy clothes then?In that case I'll just load up my paypal and donate some...[/QUOTE]

Done, who's next?

Arrived late to this thread. Just sent some cash via paypal. Will not be back to DR for a few months, wish we could do more. I may be able to send more in a few weeks when bonus check arrives.

You all rock!! Thanks for helping these kids. I feel so helpless being so far away right now but just got another article in a local paper and am scheduled to present to rotary. i also have a container shipment in the works.

Do you have a consolidation address in the US? I'm a bit south of you in Ithaca and also have some friends who can come up with some items for donation. A wish list would be great. I'll check with my local church to see if they have anything they can donate your way.

In Syracuse, I would imagine PeterinBrat. Thanks to those who have chipped in.

There are currently 18 young ladies from a few years to 16 or 17. There are three young boys 5 to 14. Right now, because of size constraints, no more can be taken in, and there is a need, for sure. We have a new English teacher! Apparently we will have a special English class on Saturdays, but knowing this teacher, I think it will be expanded into the week...

Barrels of food: pastas, soup mixes, beans, peanut butter, catchup, oatmeal, powdered milk, sheets and pillow cases. coloring books and small crayon sets. Chess sets, Chinese checkers games. (So we can have tournaments). Towels, wash cloths, toothpaste, soap, laundry soap. In other words all the stuff you need to keep 20 odd kids, clean and fed. (Did I mention vitamins????)

H.B. APPROVED!

With that I can start sorting and get ready to load.
When are you leaving for Santiago? I can donate some items if they are still needed or would be useful:
kitchen supplies
towels
Toiletries
Aspirin
Boxes of pencils
Clothing (female)
A few lbs of dried beans

Also have men's clothing but it's for a guy about 6'3" and so probably way to large with USA size 12 shoes. But if you are having a garage sale???

All of that would be quite welcome. We will be having a garage/flea market sale. Silly things like peanut butter!(Remember with 20 odd kids a large jar can go in one sitting--scary, huh?>) toilet soap, laundry soap, deodorants, whatever it is that a kid needs to be well, hygienic, and mentally alert. Coloring books with the small Crayola sets (Not those Monster boxes with a Renoir selection of colors)...Chess sets, Chinese checkers, cards.(if you live near a casino, they have used decks of cards!!)I apologize as this is pretty much a repeat of my post above. It is getting to be like a mantra around here. Every now and then I remember something different.

And thanks. It's all to the good.

Great. I went through the condo and have a pile of stuff.

When is the garage sale? I will PM with Ringo to see if he has room take it as I live in Cabarete. But if he doesn't, I will make the drive.

BUT HERE'S THE KICKER!!! I explained what i was doing to my maid as she helped me gather it all together. This woman has so little, but she wanted to know when the trip would be made to Santiago, so she could gather donations from her home and family too. This is a woman who lives in a much more primitive home than the orphanage is in now. But she has a two children of her own, a husband and supportive extended family. They are all very poor, but only in a material way; they are rich in their way of living their lives. Part of why I live here; to try to learn how to be more like that myself.

HB,

On my next trip I will try to visit Santiago for a day or two and visit the orphanage and would like it if I can get a tour of the facilities. There are some things I am thinking of that I might be able to do on a long term basis.

Regards,

CBM

cbmitch9: "A tour of the facilities" ....hahaha, that is funny. It will take about 3 to5 minutes...And it will be my pleasure.
1) Here are the two older girls' rooms with 2 bunk beds each. Here is the girls' bathroom. Here is the smaller girls sleeping quarters with 5 bunk beds.
2) This is the living room
3) This is the "formal" dining room/chapel
4) This is the computer/storage room
5) This is the hair salon
6) This is the boys' room with 2 bunk beds
7) This is the boys' bathroom
8) This is the study area
9) This is where we dry the clothes
10) This is the shower
11) This is the inverter/waterpump/cistern/battery housing
12) This is the storage area for plantains and such stuff
13) This is the cupboard
14) This is the "kitchen"
15) This is the eating/dining area
16) This is the patio

And dude!?? That's it..It was like going from Buckingham Palace to a row house in Southsea or some such place..But they are going to be all right. They are such wonderful kids....polite and kind to each other.

That was a beginning goal. As soon as we get land and start to build we will need much more. keep the donations coming and I will keep you all posted of my long term plans, I will continue to bring groups down that pay to volunteer and that money will all help fund this project. We are coming with several groups next summer but hopefully sooner as well
Thanks you to all who have helped so far!!

Good Morning, Just as a reminder please make sure that you coordinate with Altagracia y/o Evelin about visiting. Most days after 3 is OK but occasionally they have some type of activity. As the Professor mentioned Saturday at 3 a recent US university grad is beginning a long term English language course for the older kids. I met with Rafael of Supermercado Olimpico about the onging meat problems and he is going to arrange some wholesale pricing for me. I have been trying to average 5-6 chickens a week but I can't do that forever. I don't want any of donated money if you want to do something contact Professor HB and he is always doing new projects. Because of travel I got behind with the birthdays so I got to do like one big one soon.

Good Afternoon, A review of our birthday list is not as bad as I thought. We only missed four during the two months so we will need presents for girls ages 6 to 12. I am going to buy them some things as always but if any body wants to get some stuff let me know. I usually get the cake donated by Luis of Square One and I get the plates soda ice etc. I am not sure when we willl do this but I will post here when it is decided. Any body have a kids Kareoke machine?

I think that it is wonderful that people are helping in the community. But I actually wonder a bit if it is the job of the expat community to support children that were brought into this world and abandoned by Dominicans. Is there not a Dominican church that can be solicited for support?

There is a government agency, called Conani, which is in charge of street children. There is government funding for orphanages, such as the one here in Gazcue/ I forget the name but it was in the news a while back that they had not gotten their funding from the government and there was a ruckus.

The posters on DR1 cannot be expected to support these children forever.

These posts seem out of character for you.
I really think that you need to take Robert's advice from the closed post and put down the bong. If you're smoking, you don't need to be posting.
