Puerto Plata: The police state!

Getting back to the post's origin. As I mentioned there will be some errors committed and flagrant arrests committed.

You know what this does and makes people stay home and not stray to far from where their going. Is this bad maybe, perhaps yes. But think about it in a tourist town like Sosua if all you have are tourists walking the streets at night is this REALLY such a bad thing. Listen I know locals would say, hey my rights are being violated. However, when you have drug dealers approaching tourists, chain snatchers, lurking behind cars and riding as the passengers on mopeds ready to pounce on a visiting couple or single guy/gal having fun, it's hard to pick and choose. For awhile stay off the streets if you have no business there. Where are you going? Then get the hell there and stop hanging on the corners. Theses plastic chairs and tourist hanging unknowingly on sidewalks are a victim asking to be taken. Isn't it better to go into an establishment in safety and have a good time.

General Then is trying to protect the tourist in a TOURIST town and the $$$$ they bring in.

Where's the problem in the overall economy of these tourist towns?

That's an effective way of stating your point.

I just realized that I made a ton of grammatical errors but please don't let this take away from my logic in responding to this very interesting thread. Thank you.

Richard Alberto-all I was doing was correcting media-driven misconceptions about this man. He gets credit for many things that he was not responsible for, and I will make no apologies for setting the record straight on the things that I know.

If that makes me a know-it-all in your eyes that is a judgment call, not an observation based on anything I've written.

Moderators have to observe the forum rules too and if you go off topic you will not be entitled to expect any respect when you berate someone for going off topic and you reduce your effectiveness as a moderator. You must practice what you preach and lead by example. The Kool Aid comment was way out of line and unacceptable.

Thanks for posting that. :glasses:

I don't know whether to be impressed, by the police effort to clean up the area, or scared to show up, in a couple more months. :ermm:

In a couple more months there probably won't be many of the same people still around.........today more DNCD arrests in Sosua, all connected with the Internal Affairs investigation.
PERSONAL COMPLETO DNCD EN SOSUA ARRESTADO EN SANTO DOMINGO

Plus the 3 Fiscals have now been named, detained & taken to SD BUT whether these are wanted as being connected or merely as witnesses with evidence for the investigation, is unclear. One of the Fiscals is the lady who was investigating the killing of the 3 civilians by Police in broad daylight in PP several weeks back.
DETIENEN Y TRASLADAN A SANTO DOMINGO TRES PROCURADORES FISCALES

What creased me about the video, FernieBee, was the look on the faces of the two tourists - almost as if they thought this was part of the 'entertainment'.............

I have another video of something that happened yesterday in La Cienaga. Edenorte arrived with military escort to cut off people who hadn't been paying their bills. They got refused entry by a mob of people so they retreated to the Edenorte local office, which was then surrounded by same mob. Some of these people were at pains to show the camera their paid electricity bills btw. Eventually Edenorte & military escort left without cutting off anything. If you want to see the video let me know.

Lambada, you are an asset to the DR and DR1. Thanks for being so forthcoming with all the info you post.

When you get the time, I would like to see the last video you mentioned (Edenorte).

Mass corruption is everywhere. For the last 8 years, President Bush, the US Republican Party and many American corporations have ruined the world’s economy and they got away with more BS than the entire Dominican Government.
Besides, police corruption is also a major problem in the USA and Europe. I’m sure you have heard about the American Gagster documentaries. There you’ll see all the BS that the American public chooses to ignore from its public servants.
So, DR is not as bad as Ben makes is sound and its reputation is as good as it has always been, except for those naive folks from Oregon.

I love the DR and like any other country, it has its issues.

Latin American countries suffer from the same corruption problems as the USA, UK, Canada, and other First World countries, but the difference is: Latin American countries are not as adept at masking the corruption.

That's a real nice sweeping statement, but where's your proof? And I guess Barney Fwanks and Chris Dodd had nothing to do with the SubPrime loan problem.

So I quess you feel really safe and secure now? Wall Street doesn't agree with you

Besides, police corruption is also a major problem in the USA and Europe. I?m sure you have heard about the American Gagster documentaries. .

Another sweeping statement with no proof. One can find corruption anywhere, but using the words "major problem" is just BS. That is just not true.

Flattery, FernieBee, will get you..........the video you asked for :)

YouTube - La Cienega se manifiesta en contra del PRA

Ben, this country has had a reputation for corruption for quite some time - nothing new there! Maybe the difference now is more access by journalists & the media? Situations can be both talked up & down (don't I know, I have some money in an Isle of Man bank which has been nationalised by the Irish government, and trying to get a real handle on the state of the Irish economy is NOT easy :cheeky:). The reason why I don't think the sky is falling in the same way that you do Ben, I posted on this thread
http://www.dr1.com/forums/living/87148-compulsory-reading-dr-politicians.html

I don't doubt that you are sincere, though, Ben, in what you believe. But........this thread isn't about the Irish economy or corruption in the US, or whether it can be laid at the feet of Democrats or Republicans, or anything else like that so, maybe we'd better stick to the topic?

Remember I said yesterday:

Plus the 3 Fiscals have now been named, detained & taken to SD BUT whether these are wanted as being connected or merely as witnesses with evidence for the investigation, is unclear. One of the Fiscals is the lady who was investigating the killing of the 3 civilians by Police in broad daylight in PP several weeks back.

The bit about it not being clear whether Fiscals were wanted as witnesses or miscreants was me - the newspaper had them as villains, I wasn't so sure. So today one of them is interviewed in this video - he says no-one has been arrested, nor suspended, no-one is under suspicion etc:
YouTube - www. elnuevonorte.com fiscal niega que este detenido puerto plata

http://www.elnuevonorte.com/Inicio/tabid/36/ctl/Details/mid/486/ItemID/1599/Default.aspx

Attorney General not best pleased apparently (read hopping mad) & likely to launch investigation into media carrying this news.

I think you can count on this being a developing story :cheeky: so I'll be back.
