There is a sizable population in the US that would think going on the metric system would be Socialism. I'm not sure whether they are fools or just racist.
They DID change the road signs in the US. But they stupidly put BOTH MPH and KPH per hour on the signs so the KPH part was just ignored, or someone would say they got *confused* when they saw the 100KPH sign. In Canada, they switched over and never looked back.
And it's true converting to metric would be a huge pain for construction. Even threads on nuts and bolts is different. Reading cm isn't accurate enough and mm is too tiny. An 8ft sheet of plywood or drywall is 96" long and divides nicely into six 16" stud widths. We still use the penny system for nails and that goes back well over 100 years.
I use metric for some things in cooking, but for the most part I like the old 48 teaspoons to a cup system just fine.
