It is quite humorous that many are taking umbrage with this selection as this post is basically an insignificant position. Other than those that may have been outraged by her predecessor's personal life, can anybody name one other ambassador to the RD, throughout the course of history without using Google? In the big scheme of things, it is rather trivial.

the selection of her predecessor was disturbing to posters here for more than the reason that his sexual ´preference was controversial.

it was also disturbing to many on the basis of who selected him to be Ambassador.

your observation about the significance of the post is spot on. as a matter of fact, can anybody name the Ambassador to China? Japan? Germany?

trivial is not the right word. Diplomatic communications between countries can be very beneficial as far as cultural, trade and social business are concerned and a good Ambassador can make a difference .

I, for one, did not care why a POTUS made someone an ambassador to a small country. I had an investor made ambassador to Australia under Bush 41 because he was a major 'Phant organizer in FL for Bush. My concern is how Brewster brought his personal agenda to the DR which was in direct conflict with prevailing culture.

Nope, she's referring to DOMINICAN PASSPORTS.....and how is she going to do that?????

The DR will tell her to go and pee up a rope. The article already has the reaction of the DR government to her comments:

The nomination of Bernstein, of Jewish descent, was made in October of last year by the president of the United States, Donald Trump.

The employer said last March that among her projects as an ambassador is working to respect the rights of the descendants of Haitians who are affected by the ruling of the Constitutional Court and who would work for them to obtain passports.

This sparked reactions from various sectors, including the Dominican Foreign Ministry, where the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Miguel Vargas, declared that the country is free and sovereign, and that it does not accept interference from any other nation.

He assured that in the Dominican Republic there are no stateless persons and that it is governed according to its Constitution and the migratory laws.

"We are going to wait for the ambassador to come. Here we have no stateless registered. This is a country that is governed by the Constitution and Dominican laws and it is our commitment to enforce them, "said the chancellor on that occasion.

Bernstein has served as president and director of Richard S. Bernstein and Associate, Inc. since 2004, and vice president and director of Rizbur, Inc. since 2002, both in West Palm Beach, Florida.

Bernstein on her way? (this should be fun)

https://dominicantoday.com/dr/local...l-edify-new-us-envoy-when-she-arrives-in-aug/

Santo Domingo.- Business leader Robin Bernstein will assume her post as US ambassador in the Dominican Republic at the start of August, according to sources quoted by diariolibre.com.
On June 27, the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved Bernstein’s as ambassador, nominated by president Donald Trump in Nov. 2017.
During his presentation to Congress last March, Bernstein told US lawmakers that she’ll work to secure the respect of the rights of those descendants of Haitians affected by the Constitutional Court ruling handed down in 2013.
At once the Dominican Foreign Ministry rebuffed reports that there are “stateless” people on Dominican soil.
“We have reiterated that there are no stateless persons here, said Foreign minister Miguel Vargas. “We will have to properly and correctly edify the ambassador in due time, but we understand that the Dominican Republic is a sovereign country.”

I wouldn't call it an significant position. The DR by its geographical location is the biggest hub of counter narcotics coming fro Colombia and Venezuela and from here re-routed to the USA and Europe.

That alone its a tough job.

Add to it, Haiti, the Venezuelan immigration and the tourism wave and by no means is the DR an insignificant position for any ambassador.

Ahhh. What?

https://dominicantoday.com/dr/econo...-jewish-roots-a-plus-with-dominican-republic/

New US envoy’s Jewish roots a plus with Dominican Republic

Santo Domingo.- The recently-confirmed United States ambassador to the country, Robin S. Bernstein, expressed gratitude and affection towards the Dominican people for being one of the few nations that opened the door to Jews fleeing the Holocaust in Nazi Europe, where millions were killed by the Adolf Hitler’s regime.
Bernstein, of Jewish origin, in a meeting with the Dominican ambassador in Washington, José Tomás Pérez, said for her it’s an honor to be the second woman ambassador of her country in the Dominican Republic, because of her Jewish-American condition.
Arrival of Jews to the DR
In 1940, Dominican Republic took in thousands of Jews who fled from Europe in search of asylum.
At that time most nations refused to help those persecuted citizens, but the Dominican Republic allowed them to settle in Puerto Plata, where they founded the town of Sosúa.
The majority of these Jews came from Germany and Austria.
Will support activities
The diplomat expressed special interest in supporting education, the empowerment of women and disaster mitigation.
Moreover, Washington’s envoy vowed to work hard to continue the growth of trade between both countries, offering prosperity to the nations and facilitating humanitarian, cultural and educational exchanges that reaffirm the values of democracy, freedom and human rights.

Perhaps she should visit and talk with the local Jewish historians and learn why Trujillo wanted the Jews and his relationship with Hitler.

The DR is just like West Palm Beach.

Geopolitics temper US envoy’s ‘magnificent journey’ in the Dominican Republic

Exclusive for Dominican Today

by Miguel Terc, US Editor

Santo Domingo.- United States ambassador Robin S. Bernstein has had to wrangle with a major geopolitical tit-for-tat since she assumed the post on September 3, just days prior to the China foreign minister Wang Yi’s visit to the country to open Beijing’s embassy after Dominican Republic and the Asian giant forged diplomatic ties.

The Dominican Republic, in addition to El Salvador and Panama, recently established relations with China -much to Washington’s chagrin- on claims that the measure “destabilizes both sides of the Strait of Taiwan.”

Nonetheless a “most magnificent journey” is how Bernstein labels her experience of just a few months in the Caribbean country, where her predecessor James W. Brewster, ruffled a few feathers with his aggressive activism in support of the country’s LGBTQ community.

“The journey to the DR has been one of the most magnificent journeys of my life. From the minute I stepped off the plane at the airport I was treated with caring. I felt the warmth of the Dominican people, it’s exciting, it’s beautiful, and since it is so much like Florida I feel that we have shared challenges,” she said.

She acknowledges the need to deal with the economic and environmental challenges, the importance of protecting the beaches and coastlines and since she hails from Palm Beach, “I feel very much at home in the DR.”

She says that she wants to use her seasoned track record in business to help young, local entrepreneurs, especially women.

The diplomat also reveals having a moral obligation to express her gratitude for the treatment of Jewish refugees who settled in Sosua during WWII, for which she’s willing to promote faith and cultural tourism to the Dominican Republic.

Though willing to address the gamut of bilateral issues, she cited only her short time in the post as a condition.

Bernstein’s first diplomatic lesson on how to ruffle feathers occurred during her confirmation hearing in the U.S. Senate when her comment regarding assistance for Dominicans of Haitian descent. Local nationalists jumped on the statement to wrongly accuse her of ‘meddling’ in Dominican internal affairs.

The US does support stricter border security for the Dominican Republic and Haiti, she said and “we respect the DR and Haiti’s absolute sovereignty to determine the issue.”

“It’s a matter of sovereignty, the US respects the absolute sovereignty of the Dominican and Haitian people to determine their own border.

“I think that there is absolute respect- we like to help where they need us -it’s complicated,” she said.

“Certainly from a humanitarian point, when we are called upon we will continue to provide support, especially with health issues. The US will be happy to be a point of light and be a participant in resolving this challenge.”

The US diplomat added that her country’s priorities also include providing assistant to fight crime, trafficking in persons and interdiction of narcotics shipments.

We just returned from 10 days in West Palm Beach and I must say; the Dominican Republic is NOT like West Palm Beach other then speaking Spanish is somewhat normal. LOL. (we visit this area several times a year and have friends there.)

Interacting with several others from the Caribbean we confirmed that many of the Latin American countries have strengthened there trade agreements and ties with China.

Others from the U.S. Virgin Islands, Puerto Rico and other Caribbean islands stated that more help came from the other islands then the U.S. and still are having problems since last years hurricanes. Several had to leave to find work in the U.S. in order to send money back to keep their families going.

EXACTLY!

We're referring to the post of U.S. ambassador to the Dominican Republic.

We're not referring to the post of U.S. ambassador to the UK, Canada, Germany, Russia, China, Japan, . . .

The Dominican Republic.

Totally agree, "In the big scheme of things, it is rather trivial."
