My husband is Dominican but is always mistaken for light skinned black by blacks...They always say to him "Let me find you a nice black girl" since I am white.... and he is thought of as something foreign by Mexicans! Since he speaks spanish and I live near Mexico people assume he is Mexican...but I have had many people ask me "Does he speak Mexican"? LOL... I do not think Dominicans are mistreated in the US except in NY where they are known for drugs etc...My husband lived there for 10 years and told me the Puerto Ricans and Dominicans do not like each other more so than the whites disliking Dominicans. This subject can go in circles for years it is always opinions against opinion I think...:) Pam

And they probably think they're happy...

I have strong evidence that lots of Dominicans prefer each others' company.too. They just don't get St. Patrick's Day at all, still haven't learned to treat themselves to to a proper diet of highly-processed food products, and wouldn't know Mantovani from Lawrence Welk.
with their festivals, natural foods and bachata and merengue. The poor fools don't know what they are missing.

THis conversation is nuts. I have never seen blatant hatred or discrimination againsts dominicans by american (white) here in the US. If anything...here in NYC...the discrimation or hatred or whatever....usualy comes from other latino communities (P.R., Cuban, Mex etc.) or american blacks.

I do think it is true that many (white AND black) americans get frustrated when they encounter someone in the service sector that cant communicate in english...i think that is just frustration on their part with trying to communicate and get good customer service....not outright hatred. THis is probably likely to occur in smaller cities and rural areas. BUt here in NYC...i think people from all walks of life are accustomed to our different cultures, languages, food, music etc.

I do take issue with the OP that this hatred only comes from white americans tho. I've worked with a multicultural group....and the divisivness always was black vs latino (this is just my observation). And i have friends in texas (black) who refuse to speak spanish (even tho they know it) to some people.

I think there is pleanty of evidence of racism in the DR...and i have pleanty of Dominican friends here in the US. Not one has complained of "hatred" by american (whites) that has been described here.

Americans don't hate Dominicans. But "whitey" does hold it against a person who speaks and acts uneducated.

Oh snapppppp.....Soooooonnn.

well in NY.....

Many NY'ers associate Dominicans with kind of an uptown ghetto culture. They feel that Washington Heights is a drug haven and that is considered to be "the" Dominican community.

When I was waiting for my flight at JFK the other day, the scene was a typical one. About 85% of the Dominicans waiting to board the plane were well dressed, respectable looking people. The other 15% or so wore baggy clothes, crooked baseball caps, huge gold chains, etc. This small percentage were making all the noise. They were acting like idiots and you could see how the rest of the Dominican people looked upon these hip hop types with disdain.

Unfortunately, this small percentage is what is most visable to most New Yorkers and gives Dominicans in NY a bad name.

Joshua,

Please accept my sincere apologies. I had no idea that you were so highly decorated by your Junior ROTC unit. From now on I will think of you when I hear names like Eisenhower, Alexander the Great, Schwarzkopf etc.

You are a beacon of scholarship for all of us to follow.

Yeah, if you live in New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, or Florida you'll find Dominicans in the United States. Is just the 45 other states where it's difficult, particulary outside of metropolitan areas.

Why Americans Hate Dominicans

Oh, my, Joshua. In the US we always think of the East as the hub of fine education. It appears that Danbury High School has failed to teach you excellent use of written English. Perhaps Spanish is your native language?

After seen the way many US dominicans behave i can't blame them. They have nothing to do with dominicans back at home. It's funny, but i've always found white americans to be nicer and behave better than blacks (i don't use that african-american bs).

Funny, I heard that Cubans (White esp.)Are some of the most bigoted and self serving and back stabbing folks you could meet. In Fact ,just recently I had a Cuban (White) Co-Worker steal from me.:speechles

My comments have nothing to do with race. They have everything to do with the way you represent yourself. On one hand you represent like a legit "thug" from the "hood". Then you pump up your significant "accomplishments" in a high school club. And you do both poorly.

Suffice it to say that you are young. There's nothing wrong with being young but your perspectives on the world are still pretty limited. Good luck, Chief master Sergeant. I'm all done.
