Maybe they are just too proud of merengue and bachata being their national dances. It would be the same as try to make a Ukrainian dance to the Russian balalaika. :tired:

The good about this is that people from other countries like and dance Bachatas and Merengues, I'm surprised to see how people love our Dominican music.
I've been to a Peruvian pollada and to a Colombian party here in Raleigh, my feeling was as if I would be in a Dominican party as Bachatas and Menrengues were played mixed with Salsa all time.

I agree, Dominican music is becoming more and more popular in Europe as well. I have been taking bachata classes myself. It is a lot of fun.

Cumbia???

There is little difference nowadays between salsa, merengue, cumbia, regetton and many other Latin rythmns. Today's fusions mix them all together. The reason people say Dominicans don't like Cumbia is because there are few pure Cumbia offerings in the market. In my opinion, Cumbia hides in many musical themes. For instance, La Murga de Panama, made famous by Willie Colon(60's,70's)is a Cumbia with salsa flavor. During Salsa's golden era, Willie Colon could do no wrong. He took this song, which otherwise would have been unknown by any other artist and made it a classic. It was an excellent song. He also came up with Che Che Cole, a mix of merengue and cumbia and it was even a bigger hit. When a quality artist interprets a song, it makes the difference. I keep saying that any song touched by Shakira will become a hit. Shakira has brought merengue BACK with LOCA LOCA. A lesser known artist like Omega could not make it a world hit if he dressed like a woman with an elephant face. Shakira has already sold 5 million copies and approaches the zillion mark in downloads. It may surprise you that I categorize Calle 13 as mostly a cumbia band rather than regetton. While they act, dress and their attitude is regettonial, their music is mostly cumbia and Colombian folklore music. You might want to listen to the great classic "El Dia De Mi Suerte" by legendary Hector Lavoe singing with Willie Colon. This is a masterpiece of fusion of cumbia, merengue ans salsa. I believe it had 80% cumbia. Cumbia will never die, because someone, somewhere will pick it up, mix it and bring it alive again, just like Shakira has taken merengue to new heights. I venture to say, having listened to merengue in the 80s'(the golden era) up to now, That Loca Loca by Shakira, not by Omega, is the best merengue of all times. I believe some of the faster Norteno Mexican music borrows from cumbia a lot and has to be danced like cumbia, otherwise it would not be danceable. Colombians have contributed more to making salsa known than their own cumbia. In fact, I dare say that Colombians are the modern masters of salsa. The greatest post salsa band in history is Grupo Niche. So good is this band that it has changed its lead singer numerous times and each departing lead singer has become a legend on its own going solo. No band has produced more singing salsa stars than Niche. Salsa is as dead as merengue in terms of genre. Its glory days are over. Few artists are playing salsa. In the last 10 years only two singers, Victor Manuelle and Gilberto Santa Rosa have made important contributions. Marc Anthony is all over the place, and while he was brilliant in his salsa debut, his best days are over. In the 60's and 70's there were hundreds of salsa bands and singers making it happen. The last of the modern breed Tito Rojas has long been silent. Others have turned to ballads. Ray Ruiz, once a young talent in the 90's has returned with a few hits, but its all sporadic. Salsa had an opportunity in mainstream America during the Miami Sound Machine days with Gloria Stefan, but nobody else picked up where they left off. Many old bands even tried to do salsa in English and had limited success. I never gotten tired of listening to the Lebron Brothers "You Can't Turn it Back On". This was such a cool rendition of Guajira(a slow salsa dance from Puerto Rico). Many people thought it wasn't that great. But it was so catchy and a sign of the times. Along with them Joe Bataan produced some nice english salsas. Aventura has revived the effect by doing some bachata in English. I like it better in English, since I believe that Aventura copies the guitar sounds of alternative underground music like The Teardrop Explodes and The Church(bands from the 80's) Listen carefully to Aventura's guitar renditions and then listen to The Church's "Under the Milky Way" and "Reptile" and you tell me if they didn't borrow from these great rock bands. If you listen to the beginning of "Reptile" and stop, then ask a Dominican who plays that, they will say Aventura. As for ballenato, unless Carlos Vives sings nobody listens. But Vive's days are gone. Him and Shakira were the toast of Colombia, but Shakira was such a superior talent and the rest is history. But Ballenato will never be much by itself.

Dominican music IS big in Europe, especially Bachata. There are even several Bachata Festivals with thousands of attendees.

Would Shakira's La Tortura be considered Cumbia? I like her Spanish language songs much more than her English ones.

Cumbia needs more marketing. Plus I never even heard of Joe Arroyo until I moved to Miami and hung out with my Baranquillero friends. I also feel that Colombians look down on the costenos and maybe their isn't the support necessary as a result of that.

IMHO Cumbia is much like the Colombian woman, in that she?s hot sensual and sultry, but without a little bit of Dominican in her she lacks a bit. <iframe title="YouTube video player" class="youtube-player" type="text/html" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/1MY77Zjda_Q" frameborder="0" allowFullScreen></iframe>

Dominicans are talented

Maybe, but colombians are creative and talented enough to write and compose their own songs ;)
Are you trying to say that Dominican musicians are not creative and talented enough to write and compose their own song. Believe it or not, dominicans are some of the most talented people in the world and have written some of the most beautiful lyrics songs recorded by many other artists in different language throughout the world.

If you think that Dominican musicians consists just of a few bachata and merengue singers interpreting a couple of Colombian songs. Dominican musicians have much more that to offer and their talent and our taste is much more than that.

You probably dont know that we also even enjoy opera and have very talented tenors like <iframe title="YouTube video player" width="280" height="190" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/xEI_E8w0vnQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="280" height="190" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/oLg6kXeHqQ8" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="280" height="190" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/BG8aYZwUS1E" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe> just to name a few.

We also love belly dancing and have Carolina and Vanessa Angulo that would dance belly dancing circles around the best belly dancers in the world and are loved even in Egypt, the mecca of belly dancing.

You probably have not heard of Aisha Syed, Michel Camilo or Felle Vega and many other talented dominicans.

For as small of a country as DR is, it is one of the top talent producing country
in Latin America and the world. And just because you hear a few bachata singers interpret a few Colombian authors' work does not means that Dominicans are not talented and can't write their own songs. There is not just 2 or 3 bachata groups out there and some of them will not record anything unless is their own lyrics.

And for something you probably did not know, a Dominican is credited for the creation of Salsa, bringing it to your country, producing some of the top salsa singers and internationalizing salsa throughout the USA and all Latin America

And yes, I also love "Cumbia and Vallenato" very much and love Grupo Niche.

The fact that some Dominicans love to interpret some of your paisanos work should make you feel proud instead of trying to downgrade and make Dominican musicians feel ashamed for popularizing these authors' work, which I am sure they are not claiming to be theirs other than their own interpretation.

You need to know much more about Dominicans before you call us "untalented".

I bet you don't even know who Anthony Rios is, someone who only sings what he writes.

And also when it comes to baladas romanticas past and present, I bet you 10 to 1 that Dominicans beat the best Colombian singer past or present. Why Don't you produce a video or the name of an artist and songs to go head to head with our Anthony Rios for the first round?

Also when it comes to salsa Dominican Rep is not too far behind Colombia, when it comes to salsa singers. Beside the Grupo Niche and and La Sonora Dinamita there are not really many other internationally known Salsa singers from Colombia.
