that's why we don't like Cumbia:
<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="480" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/5-DUIGBJgOQ" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Que merenguito.

JJ

Este merenguito esta bueno pero a mi tambien me fascina la cumbia,
especialmente despues de uno agitarse bailando unos cuantos
merengues de corrida, es chevere cambiar el paso y relajarse
bailando unas cumbitas como estas.

It may not be in our blood but it doesn't mean that some of us don't have a taste for it.
You would be surprised to see what Dominicans have a taste for.

I have noticed this on all my trips to Dominican. That extends to the entire spanish-speaking Caribbean.

While dominicans do appreciate a good vallenato, Puertoricans and Cubans couldn't give a damn about cumbia or vallenato, unless perhaps, we are talking about Carlos Vives.

This contrasts heavily with Mexico, El Salvador, Peru, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile; nations that have adopted cumbia and given it their own spin.

Why is that? Is cumbia too damn slow and boring to caribbean ears? How can that be, cumbia is caribbean. Is it lack of marketing? Or could it be that mexicans and argentines like it because it doesn't seem to be that hard to dance? :cheeky:

I like Cumbia, but only if I go to a party or club and they're playing it, I don't play it in my car. Carlos Vives would be the exception ( and a Colombian guy told me he is a Cumbia/mixed with other stuff).

I find it to be a cool genre, my ears can tolerate it. Yes, is very different from Mexican Nortena/Quebradita, my ears can't tolerate that.

Usually Dominicans stick to only merengue( when it comes to a fast beat/tempo) because it serves as " comic relief" for our daily lives. Also, merengue has all sort of Domininican slang, the mentioning of celebrities, politicians of DR and are known only to Dominicans, and " tigueraje" that cumbia or other foreign genres lack, including salsa.

Cumbia needs more marketing. Plus I never even heard of Joe Arroyo until I moved to Miami and hung out with my Baranquillero friends. I also feel that Colombians look down on the costenos and maybe their isn't the support necessary as a result of that.

Nah, it's all rivalry. Cachacos look down on coste?os, coste?os make fun of cachacos... etc etc, but at the end of the day we all listen to vallenatos and recognize that coste?os have shown our culture to the outside world (Garcia Marquez, Pibe Valderrama, Edgar Renteria, Shakira, Sofia Vergara, Carlos Vives...)

I bought a bunch of bootleg salsa CD's on the streets in Santiago DR (I know bad bad), and they were like 50% colombian salsa. What really shocked me was that there were Galy Galeano songs on there, I didn't know anybody outside of colombian even knew who Galy Galeano was LOL, that guy is a big ?ero.

Galeano is really known between salseros circles in the DR (specially Santo Domingo where most of the salsa is listened).

But Vive's days are gone. Him and Shakira were the toast of Colombia, but Shakira was such a superior talent and the rest is history. But Ballenato will never be much by itself.

Okay, I am deviating from the original topic, but here it goes.

Those two were not THE toast of colombia. colombia has produced a lot of talent. You forgot Juanes. Vallenato may not be as mainstream, but cumbia is, at least all over south and central america and mexico. Also you are forgetting about colombian salsa. Colombia is second to Puerto Rico and Cuba when it comes to salsa, it has produced a LOT more salsa talent than the DR, here is just a few samples:

Mimi Ibarra, the salsera with the most following in the DR:

There you go again colombiaLisa, always trying to compare dominicans to colombians, and imply that dominicans has no talent. FYI, while for you or colombians it may be considered a talent for a person to be able to do salsa, in the Dominican Republic it is not viewed as a talent. Most dominican musicians whether a merenguero, a balladist, a jazzist, bachatero, a rockanroller, a bolerist, or even an avg Joe off the street can do a salsa just like the best out there. Most dominicans musicians are well rounded and will play you any kind of music and that is why a great number of them are accepted in some of the most prestigious schools and music academies in the world.

It is not that DR doesn't produce salsa talent. Though our musicians can do any type of music, they go for their music of personal preferences, Dominican musicians talent is admired by many and some such as Aisha Syed, Karina Pasian, Alih Jey, Michelle Marie, Michael Camilo, Anthony Ocana, Napoleon Dihmes and Crystal Marie have performed for important figures and places to include Queen Elizabeth of England and the white house for US presidents.

While you think that being able to sing salsa is talent and think that Colombia produces much more salsa talents than Dominican Republic, for a dominican musician, singing salsa is not seing as a talent but just a natural skill most of them possess.

Here are some Dominicans musicians showing their salsa skills.

When I posted teh question about cumbia, the overwhelming response was that dominicans are so extremely talented and have such wonderful music and are so musically self sufficient, that everything else basically doesn't measure up, that's kind of smug, especially considering that bachata composers are so self sufficient they do vallenato covers.

Fine if you don't like a genre, you don't have to. For the record, I agree dominicans are talented and have swing, but I am dispelling the notion that other countries have nothing to offer musically speaking.
