i have to say i am a bit confused about it as well but it seems we have a fraction that prefers to see on pedro clisante disheveled, tired and overweight parents dragging behind their child army and another fraction that prefers to see half nekkid hos with pungent crotch buns. and by the looks of it it can only be either or because families and hos cannot coexist peacefully.
They get along pretty well in Las Vegas (NV). Maybe all So-sewer needs is some 'Vegas style gambling (with sports book) and a few amusement parks.

There will not be a ****ing contest in this thread. There will be no name-calling, no nasty remarks, no off topic nonsense.

once a thread gets to a point --- ~400 posts... 16,000 views ..... what can possibly be left to discuss???

I have the statistics to prove it too !!!!!

Here is my analogy of Sosua? where we will consider Sosua as a bar, the government is the owner of the bar, the existing restaurants/bars are the employees, the customers are, well, the customers?

?

I like your analogy. Most of all you do not draw conclusions or say others are wrong. Nobody knows for sure how all this will turn out, but we are all entitled to make a guess.

Sosua is an evolving story, always something new happening - and we've gotten to almost 400 posts without a major meltdown.

I want to keep it an open thread, and to do that the posters have to be civil.

As far as your statistics WW.....

Sosua is not midtown Manhattan, but I remember midtown NYc in the early 80s before Disney invested... 42nd Street at the time was more popular for prostitutes and porn (and crime and drugs) and not a safe tourist destination. Disney was only going to invest if the city did something to limit the porn shops and porn theaters, so the legislators passed new ordinances... and they needed the police to stop turning a blind eye to all the prostitution (no new law needed, because prostitution was already illegal, just needed enforcement) - back in the early 80s, people used to go see a Broadway show and upon exit, there would be hookers looking for customers... It took about 10-15 years, but Midtown is much different now.

My guess, Sosua is trying to do a smaller scale transformation.... I have no idea if it will work, because Sosua is not the same kind of real estate as midtown Manhattan...

And, if any interest in Disney's influence on midtown, here is an article:
Looking back on why The Walt Disney Company decided to restore the New Amsterdam Theater in NYC
Eisner's book also discusses it in some of the chapters.

this is a difference of opinion regarding a situation which can have no definitive answer, because it is yet to happen. some of us believe Sosua will suffer economically from a purge of the pros, and some of us do not. i spoke to a lifelong resident and businessman from POP just yesterday, and i asked his opinion regarding the possible outcome in Sosua if all the girls are removed. his response was "it will cease to exist". that may be hyperbolic, but he based that on POP, which he claims took a mortal blow because of the downfall of Long Beach. this is a guy in his 60s, who has lived here all his life, and is from a prominent family in this town. his opinion is just as good as the next guy's.

I believe there will absolutely be some short term pain. But "cease to exist" is a bit harsh.

You have to remember that there is already a very large non-monger presence in Sosua and the surrounding North Coast. And there are already large investments being made to prepare for increased incoming non-monger clients, starting at Playa Dorada all the way to Playa Grande. AND there is a big push to advertise to that market. I predict that once the official change takes place (that point in time is for another thread/debate), that within 24 months after that point you will not recognize Sosua.

I got my first "Taste" of Dominicana "PU$$Y" here in SD in 1986.
It was aDICKting.
I went to every whore house in SD over the next few years.
Since then, I have seen the "So Called", government "CRACK"downs on the prostitution industry MANY, Many Times!
They are NEVER successful for one simple reason, nobody WANTS them to be SUCKcessful!!!!
Have all the government "Dog & Pony" shows you want, it doesn't, and Won't change anything!
Thank god!!!!!!!

ctrob, we heard the same thing when they flattened Long Beach. big new hotel coming at the large open lot in the corner in front of the first caseta. they brought in sand on barges to build the beach for the big things to come. that whole strip up to the street Crystal is on was going to be boomtown, if only they could get that lady Altagracia to part with the only remaining building on the strip. well, it is close to 8 years, i guess, and the land in the corner still has a for sale sign.

the best laid plans...

I do not think Sosua will entirely eliminate prostitution, just as NYC did not eliminate hookers and porn shops, but they did limit it a lot.
But, my concern is if Sosua can sustain long enough during a transition??

Eisner/Disney backed out of some of the developments they originally planned, but being midtown NYC, there were other developers to step in.
In the DR, I have seen too many places that have initial foundation and some structure - and then have just been sitting like that for years.... no new developers stepped in...

The world economy cratered 8+ years ago, and credit was unavailable. That situation has not changed that much.

Playa Rincon was also supposed to be built: 10,000 rooms were planned. Once again, that project bottomed out because of capital markets.

Similar stories are told all over the world, project planned before the crash never appearing after the crash.

The Long Beach plan may have been a sound one...before the crash.

Big Bucks are NOT going to be invested where the conditions are not just right.

20 years from now folks will be laughing about the pre-transformation So-Sewer the same way NY'er laugh about Times Square in the old days.

Times Square 42nd Street 1975 adult movie theaters - YouTube

I don't know. Whores are one of the DR's greatest assets to the GNP, along with their baseball players who almost all use performing enhancing drugs. You have a perfect mix in the residents of the DR- stupidity, no morals, no education, shameless, and good looking women. Boom! There you go. One of the best countries in the world for sex tourism, hands down!

Of course they can..but not in the same place at the same time. You will NOT have many travel brokers sending groups of clients into such areas. That's a problem the NC has today that must be changed.

Relocate the monger businesses, create a safe "war zone" that keeps the bad guys, addicts, tigueres, thieves, bangers and undesirables out. Put some security into it. Add doses of common sense. Register the ho's for health and criminal record. Heck, charge a modest admission fee, like the Magic Kingdom, and use those funds to make it a really cool, safe area. Give then a chunk of beach and run shuttles. Call it "MongerLand" or something.

I'm not anti-mongering at all. I have merely relayed what I have heard with my own ears in meetings with mucky-mucks the last 18 months*. THEY are the ones wanting...and now implementing...change.

*william webster may remember the breakthrough meeting we (not him, he wasn't there) had with a high-ranking MoT mucky muck last September who got rather animated about the then-recent ABC hidden camera report about 4 staff members at a resort in Boca Chica. Part of the report was about some guy pimping on the beach (on video) and how horrible those 4 thought it was...and they told the world in Prime Time. His/her remark: "We spend millions on ad buys to show the beauty and hospitality of the country, and one report like this flushes it all down the toilet." Trust me, they think it's a problem. And THEY are all that matters...

MJ, I remember those days, from 1968 until 1979 I worked in Manhattan - first on 43rd off 6th, then 41st off 6th across from Bryant Park. The 42nd street of those days and the 42nd street of today are proof that Sosua CAN change if they put their minds to it.

Like others have suggested, have an area designated 'red light district', and leave the rest of the town for everyone else.
