When I set up house keeping here I thought,..."I'll buy the best quality Stuff so it will last longer"!!!!

I KNOW, I KNOW!!!!
Maytag refrigerator, "Sanded off the finish" with "Brillo Verde", broke off the handles.
Stove with sealed burners, electric ignition.
Maid pried off the burners with a hammer and screw driver, and pulled off the wires.
"Tupper Ware" plastic food storage containers, don't work with out the tops, or when you set them on a hot burner!!!
PS, ALWAYS check to see they have not stored plastic food containers in the oven BEFORE you "Pre Heat"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
KNIVES, POTS & PANS, forget about them!!!!

I soon learned to buy only the cheapest of ANYTHING you can find.
They WILL destroy it at the same rate as the "Good Stuff"!!!

I can't argue with anything you say, I can't tell you how many things bit the dust at my suegra's house. And then they complain about the crappy quality of things in DR.

I've been lucky at our house, our maid is an older woman who actually listens when you tell her how to use/clean things. When she gets too old to work I'm going to cry. The only thing she's ever asked for is one of the buckets that have the thingy to squeeze out the mop, like they use in hotels/hospitals/etc. Couldn't find one in DR, but found one at a flea market in NJ, it's in a box already, gotta keep her happy.

Nothing has been ruined, but in the years before we remodeled the kitchen and added locked cabinets for the good stuff [while we're in US] so much was stolen that it would take forever to list. I had this set of great steak knives in NJ for years, never used it because I knew the wood handles would be ruined in the dishwasher, so it sat in a drawer of the china closet. New Vintage Pierre Santini Cutlery 6 Piece Steak Knife Wall Holder Set RARE | eBay Brought them to DR. Made the mistake of leaving it out when we left, and now it's a set of 5. I guess it could have been worse, they might have taken the entire set. Grrrrrrrrrr

Adapt guys ! Adapt !

2 kitchens. One in the house. With all your great stuff. Silverware, cristal glasses, carbon knifes.....
Only me and wife use that one.
If you HAVE to use it, ie have people round you want to impress with your savoir-vivre, I pull the maid aside and tell her that if a plate is stained, a cristal glass chipped,,or anything..... I WILL feed her to the dogs..... it works ! :)

And another, if possible, in a seperate structure....... and buy cheap(ish) ( lo,barrato sale carro ) stuff for it......
This is the kitchen your maid and visting family will use.

7 years later after D.R. , i have an incrusted glass wall cabinet thimgy ( my wifes pride ) with 12 cristal, glasses of EVERYTHING known to mankind.....red wine, bordeaux wine, bourgogne wine, water, white wine, tumblers.....etc, etc.... cristal decanter carafes, etc, etc......
Only one glass is chipped, and it was me that chipped it while washing up ;)

So its possible with a little planning :)

tupperware???
naaaaa,come on buddy,
you can't tease me tonight.
on the way to my buddy's place for a pool day with my gals and some female kiddies friends of my daughter, i blew just 10 miles off my own place the cylinder head seal of my Truck today, the Radiator received a opening as wide a the diameter of a fukcing beer bottle, which caused the engine to get a bit "hot" today.
sure my buddy came by the otha 12 miles from the opposite direction, picked all the girlies and kiddies stuiff up and brought the in for a BBQ chicken and Pool day.
that was around High Noon Today.
Daddy joined them with the fixed Truck by 3:30PM, man, was i thirsty after getting da shyt fixed on the darn eastern highway/Boulevard del Este.
cut down on that todays story, as right now i am back home fine, with my truck arriving on his parking lot on it's own newly regained powers, Baby Gals asleep and the Mrs listening to some kinda novela thingy while warming up some 1st class beef for me, because today i deserve that nice treatment, lol.
Tupperware.
nooo freakin' way you tease me on that tonight.
i brought a nice collection from germany,
they would have lasted for a life time if i would have stayed in germany, using them myself.
but noooo,
i had to bring the to the Isle and buy a fukcing Microwave.
get your own ideas about the outcome,
i just smell that my lil cow is warmed up, and i dont wannna get it medium or well cooked or such crap.

Tupperware,
my arse

locked cabinets??
come on, guys,
when i would need locks to lock away anything from the people taking care about my place when i am outha house, then i would know that i leave my house keys def to the wrong people.
the only locks at my place are on the Veranda door and on the front door.
whom ever i leave the keys to those, is reliable to be IN my house, with no locks needed inside.
aside of my spanish neighbours and my austrian best buddy,
all the rest of people trustworthy to have my housekeys, are dominican.
they are a mess,
but none of my close circle DR born friends ever came out to be a thieve of anything.
i could make a list of gringo thieves in this Bavaro area, tho.

locked cabinets??

Everyone I know in Santo Domingo has locked cabinets of some sort, no one trusts the maids I guess. They probably think 'why tempt them?'

The months that we are in DR nothing is locked except the front and back doors - we do lock up some of our small appliances, good cookware, liquor, etc., when we leave the country.

naaaa,
completely disagreed.
aside of the lil sweat stuff like many opened same item cans at a time, running out of fukcing Gas for the stove and such, stuff is very fine with wifey over here. if she would be a thiev, well, she sure would not live any longer with me after the first thievy action.
if you have guests who steal or damage your stuff, then you def need to get a new system about how to select who you invite as a guest to your place or not.
2 kittchen??
ridiculous.
keep the thieves out of your house and enjoy life with one kittchen and the right honest persons.
yeah, there will be knifes raped and glass will break, wtf, you are a Gringo and can afford to replace such once i a while.
as long as honestly damaged, by accident.
but Thieves in da House???, locks needed on the cabinets in the house??
you guys seem to smoke some heavy stuff or you def hang out with the wrong persons.

Well no, 2 kitchens is very sensible......
I am not going to fry fish in the kitchen in my house, thank you very much :)
Neither cook chicken innards to feed my dogs...... neither boil big pans of water to pluck the feathers off the chickens.....
I even have 3 kitchens, if u count la fodonga (?) , to roast pigs and stuff.....

Also why would one want a maid inside the house all the time ?
Outside structure has a kitchen, laumdry room, toilet, storage for all the campo stuff (chicken food, dog food, tools.....)

I didnt say anything about locks or stealing :)
How can u expect a campo guest or worker to know who much a cristal glass is worth ?
Or to cook with a steamer gadget thingy ?
You cant.
So the maid runs the day to day stuff, with all the necessary appliances, in the second kitchen....
And I can enjoy the spotless one in the house without having to wonder if she is going to cut up chicken on the marble top.....

Oh and a seperate structure allows for my dogs to be inside with us, as none wants dog hairs all over the sofa :)

You want fun and games? Try explaining to a Dominican maid how to keep a kitchen kosher: meat and milk utensils, dishes, pots, pans, silverware separate at all times. Not washed together. Not used together. Not stored together. And you explain it every day for 3 years and still find migrated silverware.

And don't even get me started about Passover. The only thing I can do is to literally put crime scene tape around the kitchen for that week. You may think I am kidding. I am not.

Issue is destroying by abuse or plain ignorance.

Example: Had 4 expensive (and hard to get there) ink jet cartridges original sealed.
Noticed ALL 4 seals were ripped.

"Did you tear the cartridges?"
"yes".
"Why?"
"To see what is inside".

Even if it is not possible to resist the curosity, will never understand why then someone has to ripp all 4 seals, because they are all identical.
List goes on and on.

Again gave up, also in searching for answers. Because there are no answers.

I find it extremely weird that you find it so weird to have locked cabinets. Seems quite common and a great idea so they don't ruin things.
We just hide our stuff we don't want her to ruin, that works most of the time but seems smarter to just have 1 cabinet for all that stuff. We forget where we hide things!!

I am fairly sure he was referring to Kosher dietary laws being weird, if you actually read what he posted and quoted.

I find it even weirder posting comments on being weird, and not actually reading the previous weird post.

Yes i know he was referring to that but he goes on in previous posts about no need for locked cupboards which i find EXTREMELY weird to not understand why this is needed here!

He quoted Meemselle, and you quoted him, very weird.
Why not quote what he was referring to, so we know what you found weird?

Changing your post is cheating!
