We have a new "jefe" here is sosua for the ministry of turismo, we also have a new "jefe" for the national police. Just like their predecessors, they are trying to make their mark. There has been numerous nightly round ups of chicas in the past few weeks. Doesn't seem to affect the boys coming into town to get laid, as most use facebook and other social medias to hook-up prior to visiting.
As mentioned they have been doing this chica chasing for years in Sosua, with no big effect on the situation what-so-ever. Well, the effect is that now normal chicas and perhaps even couples or families do not like to visit the town at night, we are left with the very hardcore putas instead - great result.
The hardcore don't care about the police at all, they go about their business as usual.
The story goes that they are picked up and taken to the station. Those who know the police and been picked up several time, just pay the fee and get out right away (they sometime pay weekly and are left alone - those are the ones you see just pass by the police and say Hi, and are not chased or picked up !?).
Some other ones who still know the drill but no money, just do a little sexual favour and are out in no time too, again the very hardcore ones.
Those don't know the drill and picked up the first time and are new, spent the night in the can, and in the morning are release minus all their money (are told to pay or will stay there even longer), that is WHATEVER money they have on them. They will also be visited during the night and offered to go upstairs for a quicky to get out early.
Quite shameful really what goes on in the Dominican Police Station (even for this town) with all the so called Colonels and Captains present, even they brought in some women police but that seemed to not changed much about protecting women and stopping abuse.
I think at the end of the the day they say these are putas and we can do what we like with them !
This is a kind of behaviour that needs to be sorted out if Sosua wants to compete for descend tourists... ! Fix the extortion and abuse if you really want to make a change... !?
Also this chica chasing has zero effect, now try to hassle the guys, the clients, and you will clean the town of all of this in a week (well, and kill it at the same time) !
I personally think (and many ex-pats tell me as well) that the only proper way to go about this is to have a a red-light zone and also take everything off the street.
So you have bars, clubs and discos that consenting adult can go to and do whatever they want, but anyone seen loitering, soliciting outside (chicas AND guys) will be prevented. You come and go straight in, get out and away. On the street, not allowed.
