Direct hit may be out ID but the trouble is still there...

How many hundred miles wide?
You can run but you can't hide

Very un-scientific. On Google earth "measured" yesterday AM and it was around 400 miles wide not including outer bands. It is now 480 miles wide. Give or take? lol

If I were still living on the north coast after looking at the map I just posted..
I'd be making arrangements to leave today.

I know four people who decided to "ride it out" in New Orleans when Katrina hit
and all of them we're dead less then 48 hours later. Why gamble on something
so dangerous you can easily avoid ?

Thanks for your words of wisdom, but they're a bit late. I'll let you know if I'm dead in 48 hours.

San Juan reported about 60mphr winds this afternoon.
getting dark on the eastern tip now, wind stays constantly on, rain is very near.
it is still only the farest out rainfields, nothing of real power nor any heavy stuff.
the next wave behind this actual one is then a part connected to the whole building named Irma.
it is now North of Estern Puerto Rico/Fajardo,
passing the PR northshores out over Sea.

Waiting to see if the PR and DR mountains will knock it down and move it more north as they did in previous storms.

This one may be just to big for the mountain effect to work?

Something aint adding up. Cat 5 with radar(s) showing this thing as a monster
with 175mph winds and just 60mph winds reported in San Juan. Perhaps these
websites / American (fake) news stations are not telling the whole truth.

With the way things are outside right now here in Los Pepinos, Santiago one
would think there is no storm coming anywhere near here anytime soon.

Firstly the NHC cone is off the North Coast now and they therefore highly doubt that we will be hit by the powerful centre of the storm. And they indicate a track at least a 100km north of the nearest DR coast and if you refer to the models it would be even further away but for the UKMet which is a bit closer.

WW this may also help you relax a bit (admittedly earlier information):

https://www.tropicaltidbits.com/storminfo/

Look at the circle at the bottom indicating the extent of hurricane force winds in nautical miles.....It suggests that the outer extent of hurricane force winds as it passes DR NC could be between 30 and 45nm (35 to 51 miles) out from centre based upon current storm set up. The current NHC track and weather models are suggesting the storm will track 60 to 70 miles north of DR or more.

I think we have dodged a bullet.

Thx Jul
I know the direct hit won't come but you're right,,,
How bad the wind is for me will be the question... and the rest of Cabrera.

Like the 3 Little Pigs -
Some of us have houses of straw, others have sticks and a few have bricks.

Anything under 100mph sounds good right about now....
hard to believe I'm asking for 100mph winds....
50mph will be better.... but may be out of the question

A decently built house will withstand a Cat 1 (74 to 94mph) with cosmetic damage such as shingle and gutter damage, Cat 2 from 95mph is when a risk of structural damage to roof for example kicks in. The Cat 5 Barbuda and SXM had, can wipe the slate clean and apparently 90% of homes in Barbuda are demolished.

Based upon what I posted, it would appear that if nothing changes in the information used, you will not even get a Cat 1(74mph) and the information I have received from folks in a similar geographical position south (of a 185mph core incidentally), to what DR will be in tomorrow confirm this.

I am sure Canadians like UK folk living on the west coast are used to storm force gales at strengths higher than 74mph? Not nice but a decent built place handles it.

It is all speculation of course based upon current information and things can change
