I am at a loss to see why a single man should not need a cook and why more than one would need a cook . For me, I prefer to shower in the morning and have my breakfast waiting for me and after I return from playing golf or tennis or swimming , I certainly do not wish to do anything in the kitchen, even if I could . My home needs dusting daily and my clothes need washing and ironing daily ..I cannot think that that is out of the ordinary . Especially in this country where even the most middle of middle class have domestic help .

Many men including me, like the morning ritual of grinding and preparing my coffee just the way I like it, and the same for making breakfast. I was like that when I was single and I'm still like that.

Yes , I know people who like kitchens !!

Well just keep going along that way ..if it suits you No need to change because I hate the kitchen I will tell you a little anecdote . When I was young at university in London , I was very friendly with another student whose father was President of the Royal Blind Society . His favourite pastime for relaxing was cooking . At a dinner before the annual Blind Society Ball , he even cooked for the Patron of the Society ,The Queen Mother. I was fortunate to be there and was mightily impressed as was HM . But for me , I can spend hours in the garden but loath the kitchen so I need a cook for all my meals. My wife also really preferred to let someone else cook .

My wife is an excellent cook but she doesn't enjoy it or have the time. She puts in 12 hour workdays as it is. We both love to garden very relaxing.

5k for a guy alone or a couple is more than enough to live comfortably. Not like a king though. (At least not in SD).

Family with children is a whole different story. Then 5k isn't enough to live even decent.

But most of us prefer to live indecent, don't we?

I can live fine in the Netherlands with 3k, in DR I'm not even halfway with 3k.

Well how much do you speand on fastfood, sugar cereals, pop......etc. Hard to lower your rent, car insurance...etc but what you eat and where can greatly affect your income.

Yes, I agree. Even though things like take out food or eat out is a relative small component of our spendings. We spend a lot in supermarket spendings since my wife won't limit fruits / healthy granolas / organic almond milk for the children. Myself I'd not buy so often grapes and strawberries or apples, but she does and since I know why she does it, I let her, as long as we can afford it.

Also, our expenses are high because of sports of the children (soccer 2x usd50 , gymnastics 1 x usd50), rather expensive health insurance, I'm not limiting on internet plan of cell phone plan. Maintaining a house is more expensive in DR because things break more often, same on vehicles.

When I say a reasonable budget to live comfortable (not like a king) with four children is 7k, that doesn't mean we couldn't live on less. It means that if I want to live how I'd live in my homeland (at 3000 euros) it costs usd7000 here.

I have a friend who is retiring this year he asked me how would he live in RD on 5k a month I told him like a King
Would you folks agree?  I think he could live anywhere on the island With King Status. ......

Something which hasn't been mentioned yet is the cost to furnish an apartment. Yes, your friend can rent a furnished apartment but if in for the long haul I always feel it is better to own your own furniture. Pots, pans, sofa, flat screen expenses can add up quick.

I would be uncomfortable in someone else's furniture long term because my children are exterminators :bored:, but for a single guy ?

Plus, I would love my own touch in a decor, but I am sure, most guys don't worry about things like that.

Or is it the lack of ugly chairs ? :cheeky:

I came to retire here and live like I am accustomed to in Europe. I use approximately $8,000 per month here in Santiago. I do not have any loans but a typical lunch with our friends runs in Excess of $1,000 (US).....we all love quality food & fine wine. I also dine weekly in the capital and the good restaurants will run at least $100 a head.

That is why people say you can live fine on 5000 but it's all about lifestyle.

I feel like living in DR is becoming more expensive, specially in the bigger cities. And at least compare to what I remember as I child (my dad could get a by a whole month with what I probably spend in a week). Anyways, I am still relatively young and don't plan on moving out of my family's house nor getting married till I am making over 7k.

I dont know what these people are talking about in regards to the capitol. I live like a king and I barely spend 3k a month and I eat out 3 or 4x a week. I spend about a 1000 for rent, $100-$300 for electricity, $120 for cable, phone, and internet, $300 on food. And the rest is spent on uber, restaurants, clothing, and disco money. Id assume its way cheaper if you live anywhere else. 5k is way more than enough. Hell some months I barely spend $2500.

I note that you have no domestic servants and no insurance and no security, do not go the theatre or picture theatres , do not play sport and do not go to the beach and do not give any aid to Dominicans . ,, a very nice little cocoon

some people could survive and live well on 5k and some would need 8k or more ...as has been noted it depends on what one likes to enjoy ...some guys see nothing in drinking top shelf liquor every day and going to expensive restaurants regularly and having domestic help
as a single guy ,personally i would not want a maid around my apartment daily to cook my meals ....I do have a woman clean the apartment on a weekly basis ..but I leave my apartment while she is there ..if I don't want to cook ill go out to eat ..one of my biggest expenses when vacationing in d.r. is gas ...I go to the beach one day and go for a drive the next day and have driven all over the island
some people live a simple life and others lead a more extravagant life ...to each his own

How much are you people paying your "servants?" I clean my own apartment or my friends do it for free. The same goes for food. My friends don't mind cooking at all. The few times ive had a maid clean my apartment she only wanted $15 usd and my place was spotless.

Please refer to another thread about payments to a gardener and domestic staff ..you will see much information from me and others.
