5000 $US is 237,000 DOP. I would bet most expats are doing well on less. Of course if you own your house it makes a huge difference. I spend far less and we support two households.

Can you explain that please?

In what way does owning your home make a huge difference?

5k doesn't buy you much security in crime-ridden DR, in fact being seen as a kind of well-off that makes you a target (but not rich enough to get all the house/personal security personnel.... ). So a king, no, a well-off with mark on your head, yes.... lol

With that kind of money head for a place which is a bit safer, organized and well, civilized, and that money can give you a comfortable life with safety and less headache, why DR....!

I have a friend who is retiring this year he asked me how would he live in RD on 5k a month I told him like a King
Would you folks agree?  I think he could live anywhere on the island With King Status. ......

If he's living alone he'd live extremely well in SD. Even better in a small town, because rent, food, eating out, paying rates for cleaning staff are a lot cheaper. He'd also save on fuel because there's no need to drive everywhere.

5k per month is more then ample to live very comfortably in Santo Domingo. My wife and I have been living very well on that amount over the last 5 years. Nice fully furnished apartment (renting), eating out almost every night, driving nice jeepeta, traveling somewhere in the country at least two times per month. If you're single then possibly the chica expense could eat up the money fast, depending on how you handle it.

I break it down this way
1) 1300 rent thats get you a beautiful place with security
2) 500 food monthly
3) 300 luz monthly
4) 100 Cable
Total 2200

leaves you $2800 for entertinment and beach and good times taxis

I think that a very good life doing what every the hell he wants.....his money will go alot futher here than in usa and he will have more fun...............:D

Healthcare / health insurance? Help in the home? Taking cabs everyday in a city that doesn't really give you a choice than transport motorized easily is 500 per month as well. (Unless you don't leave your house).

My breakdown (trying to leave out spending for children:

Rent 1200, Fuel 400, supermarket 1000, health insurance 250,  internet 100, cellphones 100, help at home 300, eat out (once a week) 400, other unforeseen costs 300. That makes about 4K. Now include a trip once a year back to your homeland. Than you have maybe 700 per month left for entertainment, including trips to the beach / countryside (spending the night). Possible but not royal.

Now include children and you're at 7k for just making ends meet. I don't know about USA but money goes much further in (many parts of) Europe than in SD

1000 a month for food maybe if he is 500 pds no more than 400
he has health insurance for life another 250 his way
one thing I left out is a gym membership 100
if he lives close to the beach thats more money his way walking distance
no way 500 in cabs I will hook him up with uber most he will spend is 200 .
My friend is going to be living very welll here. ask any dominican how they would live on 237k peos a month .....

Good Debate though
I live very well in the capital on a lot less than 5k

From the other side of the coin, I believe that $60,000 a year would only permit you to have a very ordinary life here ..I personally would hate to try it but I suppose it depends exactly where you wish to live and what sort of life you wish to lead. If you simply wished to live in one of those north coast areas ,say Sosua,Cabarete,Cabrera or Las Terrenas and go to the beach or the bar or watch television and also do your own house work ,then you could do it quite easily.
If you wished to live in a secured resort , more expensive. However,if you wished in a good area of the capital and have a maid and cook ,and why not in retirement, and go to the films and to some concerts and go to a decent restaurant once or twice a week as well as needing transport such as a taxi or your own car , then the $5000 per month would fritter away like butter in a saucepan . I might also add that you may care to entertain friends for dinner with decent food and wine ,which is not so out of the ordinary .
As, I said ,it is quite possible but may reduce your life to some dreariness.

There is no such place in the DR. Banks even tip off thieves when you leave the bank with a decent size withdrawal amount.

ROTFLMAO, what in the world does a single male need a cook for? Maybe a cleaning woman once or twice a week.

5k for a single male in la capital will have a nice life but definitely not living like a king.

Guess I like dreariness. Almost never eat out, wife doesn't drink and I only drink about once a week or less. Gas for the Santa Fe is a big expense, around 8000 pesos per month or more depending on how many trips to Santiago, car insurance with full coverage around 40,000 pesos a year, excellent medical insurance 8400 pesos per month for two people, Cellphone bill less than 2000 pesos, Cable/internet/home phone around 3000 pesos, electrical and yes we have a/c but only on for sleeping- 2400 pesos per month. Food varies as we give my MIL whatever she asks for to buy food, sometimes it's more than other months. Usually about 20,000 per month. Maid/cook - 7500 per month plus medical = 9000 pesos. Pricesmart once a month - 10-12,000 pesos. We take one or two trips abroad every year- Europe or South America.
