Frank,

good luck to you in all this. Sounds like you will have no problem finding a job one way or another once you are back.

Jobs are hard to find. Ones that are as tenured and flexible as Frank's was at Jose O'Shay's/Rocky's are not easily found. Good luck, indeed.

I'd just like to say that unless you have tried running a business in Dom Rep, you have no idea of how hard it is. As Frank12 pointed out, they were paying the taxes, paying the luz, paying liquidacion and the thousand other bills you have to pay. The peso is constantly dropping against the dollar, so prices of anything imported are constantly going up. Constant hassle by authorities, from DGII to Sgacedom (who supposedly collect money to give to recording artists, complete mafia) to TSS and the threat of fines from everyone and his dog if you don't comply with all these tiny regulations that nobody has ever mentioned before. And then you have the customers who cannot believe that the prices in Dom Rep have gone up since they came in 1983 and can't understand the daylight robbery of paying $3 for a beer in a prime spot on the beach. So many bars, restaurants, hotels run by good people fail here.

A small business will buy beer for about RD$ 55 for a pequeña and sell it for RD$ 150. After you take off the tax and the propina legal, the RD$ 150 comes down to RD$ 117 so the business is getting RD$ 62 margin on each beer. The cost of the electricity in a place like Rocky's probably comes to about RD$ 40,000 per month, so you need to sell 650 beers just to pay the luz, before you even think about paying your staff.

Another question SKY, if Rocky doesn't pay up can the court give the property back to Frank?

Really, Frank is out of town now. When he gets back if he wants me to post the details I will. If not I won't.

Or we can wait until we see the "For Rent" signs go up for the next person with a dream to open a beach bar. Turn key this time.

Turn key? I don't think so, but at least they will have a new roof, floors, electrical, bar and some kitchen stuff (things built-in). It is an awesome dream to have a bar on the beach and could be a fantastic life change...nice location and view from the restaurant to the beach and ocean... Plus happy people from all over the world stopping in... :)

Certainly a lot more turn key than it was before the place was essentially "re-placed". As turn key as possible, maybe? It was certainly running as a restaurant, albeit not a popular one. Pehaps Frank12 would even be willing to work there.

As far as owning a bar on the beach, I never had that nightmare.

I just talked to someone I know who works at Rocky's Aqua in Connecticut. Rocky left for the DR today alone. I know he already has a Dominican lawyer. Can we please drop the rumor that he's bringing an American lawyer with him?

I've been in a lot of old bars on a lot of beaches around the world. O'Shey's is like that. You can go to many of the sme beach bars. Rocky's was nice, but wasn't a old beach bar. Wasn't Conn. He took left 3 -4 tv's. For football. O o's you could watch almost all the games. It was the place to be. Big Frank would argue with you and tell you if he won or lost. I have lived in Cab. for 10 years. Ask Frank 12. It's now just an other beach town. Really too bad. Maybe someone will step up and take O's Place. I hope so.

With the same staff and management carried over. Who wants to invest in leftovers? Discounted price if you take on the old employees. Please. There is a reason only some fall for this maneuver. You are better off in buying that bridge in Brooklyn, US of A.

Some food for thought, although a dream of many, the vast majority of seaside spirit venues are failures. Most of those dreams evolve from sitting on one side of that respective bar slab, and looking a far, over a glass or two, or seven. The establishments that are successful, are remembered twenty five years later.
