leaving STI monday afternoon the immigration woman who handled my departure asked , very clearly:

"how was your stay in the dominican"

yep thats it...she finnished right there....

on all your behalf I berated her unmercifully...she was in tears as i left her half on the floor hanging from her chair...as the crowd formed....

yeah i straightened her right out.....

I'm with the immigration officer on this one. Her usage is gramatically correct, although the official country name is "Rep?blica Dominicana".



A mi me fue de maravillas, y voy a regresar a Dominicana!

From the Dominicans I know very few use it as Mirador describes it. For some reason it sounds better in Spanish than in English. If she said it in Spanish I guess it would be ok. I don't know on this oneeee.

in the past few years many say, voy pa' la Republica or pa' Dominicana, but before that we all used to say I'm going to Santo Domingo, well actually we still say it most of the time.

FYI toadster the Dominican team had "Domincana" on their shirts for last years Classic(that's baseball fer yall furriners).

I admit it saying Dominican does sound odd/ugly but in Spanish it isn't so bad.

Also, I think if anybody should be in the know it would be Mirador since he lives here and is Dominican.

I would never have trusted investing in Cap Cana...because you know the dominican bigs would be the LAST to lose money there...but now the donald might be in...you know he thinks just like them all the time....he takes his cut and leaves the leftovers for the rest to fight over....

YOU PEOPLE keep beating the same damn horse, the poor thing is in shreds. We call it whatever we want to call it. Whenever i speak in spanish I always say I'm going to Santo Domingo, in english its either the DR or The Dominican Republic, in casual conversation I say whatever I feel like saying, the island, la isla, la republica, Dominicana, Quisqueya. Dios mio como joden ustedes con lo mismo.

The name of a person..place..city..country is exactly what it is. A name. It is just a unique identifier to differenciate between things. If does not ABSOLUTELY need to conform to grammer usage or grammar structure.

Pop (popular) culture continues to affect every aspect of our lives (including languages) over the years and it will continue to. Which means atimes with the passage of time..convenience etc...letters get dropped or added in words. It is not a big deal.

To the extent that someone says something and the meaning is understood, then we can at least be happy the most important thing has been achieved which is.... COMMUNICATION AND BEING UNDERSTOOD.

Even the dictionary continues to change and new words get added as time goes by. If language was a static, we should just freeze the dictionary in time space and be done with it forever.

Going to the American?. Sure why not?. I can live with it especially if people at least understand what you are saying.

I was actually referencing the use of "Dominicana" in the phrase he had in his post:

I did say that in English "Dominican" does not sound correct but in Spanish apparently "Dominicana" is ok.

Also, if I'm not mistaken your not a native English speaker right? So then how can you be a better judge about English than Mirador?
