nothing worse then some moron native speaker (no, i am not referring to chip or mirador, just talking in general) who claims he KNOWS english better than foreigners. after years of studying english and taking exams i probably know more about grammar than 99% of native speakers - this is how you learn a foreign language at school. yes, natives speak and understand their language but they have no clue what is correct....

back to the topic: in polish it is either REPUBLIKA DOMINIKANY (doesn't need translating, does it?) or DOMINIKANA.

Point taken dv8 - I can certainly correlate that has been the case at times with Spanish. However, just to clarify I was "having fun" with Mountainfrog for the very same thing - he was saying that we shouldn't consider Mirador to be a good reference when it comes to English grammar and I answered to him in the same way since he isn't a native English speaker either.

We have a phrase for that in English - "the pot calling the kettle black" and in Spanish - "el burro llamando al conejo, oreju".:lick:

Aslo, where do you get off calling this guy a redneck, freco? If you don't know Einstein Bob's guys gf would be considered "black" in the US. FYI rednecks don't like blacks - I would recommend that you study up on your English pal. They have night classes for people to learn English as a second language if you didn't know that already.

And also, what is this thing you got with Bob? Out of your 18 posts I see 7 specifically directed negatively at him. I've got some advice - change your attitude or hit the highway! - nobody likes and ignorant smartass.

i'm not HB.... but if los dominicanos say "voy para dominicana"
"soy de santo domingo" even if they're from nagua,
rich dominican would say "voy para la Republica"
all of them sound good and are acceptable by dominicans themselves,,,
what's the big deal here? Things don't have to be grammatically correct to be accepted by society as a way of saying words; that's the beauty of slang nowadays... besides,, each country in Latin America have different ways of saying different things.

El Diego, I cant answer for everyone, but Ill answer for me , since I know why I started the thread....and the path this thread takes may go past what i was thinking..thats fine too

I had noticed many many times a girl would come on and say she went to the dominican on vacation and met this guy on the animacion team.

well right off the bat she is bait for some verbal fun...because hey, some people enjoy reading that stuff.....and many times some repliers would say that the country isnt the dominican..so get the name right.

well i could care less about what the name of the country actually was or how it was spelt...didnt mean too much to me....but I noticed there were 2 types of people that replied like that...

the first group started off with the comment about not knowing the name of the country you went on vacation...well that usually set the tone and very little help was offered the OP...the other group might have had some fun , might have tried to help, but then in passing mentioned that the OP needed to know that the dominican wasnt a proper term to call the country.

either way...didnt effect me much...i had heard it called so many different thing, I didnt think it was a big deal...you seldom ever hear it called like it is printed on their money....and some people at work just call it Santo Domingo....and that doesnt include proper spanish.....which I wouldnt be experienced enough to know anyway

BUT once this woman spoke that word....I thought it was humorous and I just had to bring it back to the forum for a litmus test.....

you know to rub in the noses of all thos epeople who berated those women( mostly) who "were'nt calling the country the correct name"
