ok..i think i get the confusion here.

in english..."the republic of" usualy preceeds a countries name. So even there is a republic of in there somewhere...it is just Ireland, China, Rawanda etc. All republics.

These crass references of being "IN" the domincan....doesnt translate into spanish do they? since there is no gender applied? ..and perhaps that is why that only gringos and expats keep this dead horse of a joke alive.

Sorry guys...

next time you have a friend traveling to many of the "republics" from all over the world...see if you say...How did you like the Repubic of Ireland?

Also.why is this site called DR1...why not RD1?

the whole point of the thread is that if a pure blooded full fledged DOMINICAN, working in the tourist industry or in a public aspect called the dominican republic "the DOMINICAN"

then we shouldnt jump down a newbies throat when they come on here pre-empting their sanky woes by starting telling us on their last trip to the DOMINICAN........bla bla bla

heck even the baseball team representing the dominican republic didnt use their official name..they used a seldom heard term

Now you are really getting me confused Robert (Proper name for Bob - which is normally spelled with a CAPITAL 'B'!!). Was it not you that started this thread saying how YOU had lambasted the poor migracion empolyee?? Did you do that just to make the point later that we shouldn't lambaste the nebies who use the term 'Dominican' for the country's name?? What a devious head you have on your shoulders Sir!!

What I further do not understand (because you have not told us yet unless I have missed it) is whether the good lady migracion officer concerned, spoke to you in Soanish (Dominican) or English? If English I can see she could make the mistake because English is not her first language. If she spoke in Spanish, she was using the colloquialism which is accepted here - so she was perfectly in her rights to do so!

As a person from Great Britain - I often use the term 'from Britain'. I even use the term (incorrectly) 'England' at times when I refer to the WHOLE Island of Great Britain. Being "British' this is my right - if I were from The US of A, Canada, Republica Dominicana, this could be considered disrespectful & require some form of mild rebuke so as to educate me as to the correct manner of referring to the said county or Kingdom!

Similarly, if a Dominican refers to his/her country as Dominican, La Republica, Santo Domingo, Quisqueya or anything other than the Republica Dominicana, ...... that is THEIR right & should be accepted without (serious) rebuke. If the story you told unfolded in the way you described, I can only wonder at what the agenda was in causing this young lady to be so chastised?? ~ Grahame.

Here's a woman who sincerely wants to wish you a " bon voyage" and you, Mr. righteous, "berated her unmercifully". I take back any apologies I might have mention about my disgust for you. You truly are an a-hole.

I'm with CC on this one.
I believe it's just a matter of how he told the story, that gives the appearance of having been rude.
I have met Bob several times, and, quite simply, he's one of the good guys.
Bear in mind, that we do have a responsibility, as English speakers, to assist others who are making the effort to speak our language.
If we go around misnaming their country in English, they will learn the same mistake from us.
It's our duty to make the effort to nip this in the bud, before everybody starts saying it, and how stupid does it sound, if someone were to say, I just got back from the Canadian?
I was just in the American?

It was obvious from the beginning that Bobs post was in jest and that he hadn't given the girl a hard time. The bushbaby isn't the United Kingdom the proper title. My granny allways said she was from England, and she was, Sheffield.
My cousins live in the States(USA), or as they say in the Southern States. In the end what counts is everyone that you are talking to, know where you are talking about. A lot of optical rectimitism around here.
