Ok folks, here we go again. I don't know who these people are on the local site groups, but too many are posting absurd questions which to me is indicative that they should have returned on one of the ferry flights. It is a sad, sad thing to see that there are folks in a national emergency that simply have no clue where to get the appropriate info. Big part of this is they don't speak Spanish.

You don't go out unless you need groceries or pharmacy. You don't go to the beach and walk your dog or kite. You don't go to the supermarket 2 and 3x per day. You don't ride your Harley to Cab East and back after 5pm. You don't go for a walk to get excercise. You simply stay home. You don't need to ask Charles Usterlandt on Everything Cabarete if you can go to the beach to feed the beach cats and dogs. You don't go buy fruit in Gaspar because you feel the fruit guy likes you because you're a special gringo. You stay home. You simply stay home. Your vacation is over. Do push-ups in your house. Organize yourself. You're not in Oklahoma.

And if you need real answers, try this site. Some of these Medicare B recipients here really know their stuff.

Yes, you do go for walks for exercise if you so choose.

Thanks!

"The Minister of Public Health warned on Wednesday that the curve in the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 could extend to the end of June, if the authorities do not take more drastic measures with confinement and social distancing. Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas alerted the coordinating commission and the president of the Republic, Danilo Medina, to tighten the measures in the population to be able to return to normality. When questioned by journalists about his statement, he said that what is happening in the country is that during the day the social distancing is not being respected that if it is carried out at night when the 24-hour curfew is implemented. "The distancing measures are not enough to guarantee the continuous control of COVID-19 in the country, and more restrictive measures are required if we want results in less time," the minister warned. The studies that the ministry is carrying out indicate a prolongation that exceeds the month of June in the curve that is managed if more aggressive measures are not taken, according to the head. Sánchez Cárdenas offered the statements during the reading of bulletin 27, which indicates an increase of 328 cases in the last 24 hours, to accumulate 3,614, and a total of 189 deceased."

~200 tests a day over 9 days, It would take that long for the confirmed numbers to double. Does nothing to address the actual true rate of infection or the time that number takes to double...

They still have flights, maybe it's time to get out NSP!
I suggest you do before it's too late. At the best, you can go back once the DR returns to a semblance of normality.

There is no one in their right mind that can believe that a 3rd world nation can weather this pandemic and concomitant economic collapse better than a 1st world nation.

That's a dangerous bet that oddsmakers would not favor the DR with. If you have a chance, get out. If Covid is raging like wildfire in the US, it's going to incinerate the DR.

It would be nice if testing in this country was expanded and reported so that the reported numbers can be considered "somewhat reflective" of the on-the-ground reality.

"raging" "incinerate"?? just like the US , the vast majority of the people that get covid19 will recover and/or dont even know they have it.

It took nine days to double, so that's actually good news.

This has nothing to do with the case doubling, it just means they have doubled the tests in 9 days.

As said many times before, Austria with the same population size and also a large tourist industry like DR, is every single day doing more tests then DR in 2 month.

At that ridiculous low level of tests the number of cases in DR have no connection to the reality and there is absolutely nothing you can read out of those completely irrelevant numbers. It would be the best for everyone if they stop publishing those numbers as they give a false security and have no base on reality.

I have said it before and I continue to say it: As long as they do not do the 24 hour they could as well do nothing. How they do it now is just a waist of time and money.

If you do a Wuhan-style lockdown for 6 weeks its resolved. You take once a hit for 6 weeks and then its over.

What they are doing in DR (and other countries) is terrible, they have a lot of economic damage and it will take forever. This is of no use and is the worst of all. Maximum economic damage and still a health.catastrophy.

In Austria they did an almost Wuhan-Style lockdown and the numbers are exactly (+/- 5%) following the wuhan curve. After over 1000 new cases per day we are now in week 5 of lockdown at 60 new cases (with 8000 tests a day) . Why on gods earth are not other countries simply following an existing manual from Wuhan how to do it. And Austria showed that it can be done in a democracy as well. And Austria was hit hard as neighbour of Italia and with a large tourist industry and they made big errors to close too late. But once they did they did it radically. Why all the suffering and the economic damage for closing but not closing completely? Are they completely crazy thinking they are more intelligent and thinking they can get away in any other way?? (There was another way in Taiwan, but that only is possible if you do it very early on, which is not the case in DR and not in Austria)

As of today, masks are mandatory in all public places

The use of masks becomes mandatory in public spaces
SANTO DOMINGO (EFE) .- The use of masks becomes mandatory starting today in public spaces and workplaces in the Dominican Republic, announced the Minister of Public Health, Rafael Sánchez Cárdenas.

This measure will be put into effect in a Ministry directive published at noon on Thursday, according to Sánchez Cárdenas in a virtual press conference.

"Now that we are mandating the use of masks to go out into the streets and in the workplace, please use it, respect the use of masks on these trips until more restrictive measures are taken in that direction", said the minister.

The most restrictive measures, the minister pointed out, "should put the focus" on the provinces that have an incidence of the coronavirus "much higher than others."

The provinces with the highest incidence of coronavirus are Duarte, Distrito Nacional and Hermanas Mirabal.

The directive also obliges supermarkets, banks and other businesses to enable special boxes to serve the elderly, which is the group of the population most at risk for coronavirus.

The Dominican Republic accumulates 3,755 infections and 196 deaths from COVID-19, a disease declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

In his speech, Sánchez Cárdenas urged the population to "intensify" social distancing measures to prevent the number of infections from accelerating again.

So if we don't know any real numbers, if they aren't "connected to reality", why are any meaningful at all beyond those we know: number of positive tests (do we ever know of they are negative), number of hospitalizations and number of deaths (does the DR also use the loosey-goosey death criteria as in the states?)

I don't know about this alleged "false sense of security/" How about some accurate numbers so people can make rational decisions? Making decisions on worst possible outcomes makes as little rational sense as "false sense of security."

I found this interesting (machine translated from the original Hebrew):

Israeli Professor Shows Virus Follows Fixed Pattern
The peak of the expansion is behind us and the "plague will probably almost completely wane within two weeks"

Optimistic outlook or unsubstantiated information? Professor Yitzhak Ben Israel, head of the Cyber Center at Tel Aviv University, claims that within two weeks the plague will be almost behind us. "Things are misleading and outrageous," says an "expert" in response to things

Ronnie (Aharon) will flourish and Prof. Zvi Ziegler of the Technion will publish in the article. The information is based on comparisons with other countries - in all of them, the data indicate the same trend: after the peak of morbidity that occurs around the 40th day, the corona epidemic is waning and the numbers are dwindling.

"Surprisingly, the graph data is similar in countries that have been severely closed, including the paralysis of the economy, and in countries that have continued in ordinary life," the professor notes, explaining that the data indicates that the closure policy can be abolished within a few days, and replaced by a moderate social distance policy.
