Are you really saying migration is wrong ...you know the people that the lawyers get their info from. Whoa!
Yes, I am saying that Migracion under the PLD was wrong. That is when that website and information was created.

There is no immigration law that allows for the payment of overstay fees. Feel free to look that up. There is no such law.
I actually read the immigration law, so I am 100% certain of that .

For the sake of discussion, let us say that somehow without revising existing immigration laws it is now magically legal for people to extend their stays up to 120 days in total. What happens to squatters who live here and are not legal?

That's the group that bothers me....

Those who show up and set up camp w/ no intention of leaving or complying....
What good are they?

A bonafide tourist is welcome.... register yourself - step in and enjoy !!

Lmao! Why do you care, little willy? What an overstayer does or does not do has no affect on your life. Yet you're bothered. Get over yourself already. But what good are they? Hmm they're renting these empty condos, spending money in restaurants, malls, etc.; you know the daily the things that boost economies. Lol you guys are hilarious.

When I first came to the DR, I believe the "exit fee" was called an "exit penalty". You get a tourist card and if you overstay, you pay a penalty. If people think about it like a fine, it's much easier to undertstand. You are in the country illegally and you pay a fine when you leave.

Migracion has now offered people the chance to pay to extend their tourist cards, and the amount involved just happens to equal the fine you would otherwise pay on departure. So you are no worse off, but you are legally in the country during the extension, so in fact you are better off.

I fail to see why people can't get their heads around this, it isn't rocket science.

Wait. If you take the second partial derivative of the overstay fee with respect to time...Whoa! It is rocket science!!!!!!!!!!

Exact same thread discussed months ago when they published the online visa extension.

Yea right, pay it online then when you leave and they detain you, start screaming about your online receipt and tell them you already paid the exit fee🤣

Just another reason what is done next has to be part of the laws and not some work around the laws like the exit fees are.

So is the change now that there is a 4 months tourist visa ? That would help a large part of the snowbirds and maybe they have statically seen most overstayers didn’t stay longer than that.

Maybe the 4 months visa thing was Part 1 basically solving then the snowbird issue and probably most overstayers if I understand it right. Then Part 2 being dealing with the long term overstaying and making residency easier to get more people legalized. The one year mark being crucial where Guzman says as I understood it that one “should consider” applying for residency.

Remember, as johne has repeated many times, we are just a forum of opinions.

They could just add the fees to the law, Costa Rica has it. 100 USD per month if you don't pay , you are banned for the amount of months you overstayed. Pretty simple.
