The DR has its share of anticontagionists many of whom voiced their opinion on dr1.

What is interesting is that this is nothing new.
Ever since the development of agrarian society 10,000 years ago we have had plagues, epidemics and pandemics and there have always been a small segment opposed to methods used to slow the spread of disease.

Following the abatement of the diseases the proposed behaviors have invariably been shown to be INSUFFICIENTLY STRINGENT.

And here we go again never seeming to learn a lesson.
The first recorded epidemic was 5000 years ago in China of all places.

I do not mind the anticontagionists reaping what they sow but they drag the rest of us with them.
For thousands of years masks, isolation and hygiene have been shown to be effective to reduce community spread yet we still have the segment who will spread this disease by refusing simple changes in their behavior.
The DR is a small country and stopping community spread should be simple.
Other small countries have done a great job.
One month of strict regulation enforcement would bring the spread to a near halt here.
Everyone is suffering but the fastest way to a return is to do what we know works.
It seems clear that what we are doing is not working and insufficiently stringent.

I apologize for the offtop. Will get back to that when coronavirus vaccine is proven to have a side affect on the ability to conceive. As soon as the evidence appear in the Nature or other reliable medical-science journal, I'll be the first here to say that I was wrong.

Frankly speaking I didn't know that some ppl don't see any difference between being cautious with regard to the possible side effects of the vaccines which didn't have enough time for a thorough trial and those who believe in something like " a secret billionaires circle wants us to be robots-slaves for them". Seriously? . I have nothing to add here except for that " I shun these people since I have no idea what they might do".
I am of the opinion,we should shun you.Hey stay in your home country,it might be best.

Isn't best practices to ISOLATE THE SICK? NOT THE HEALTHY? It's been terrifying to see people's ability to use common sense degrade in the face of all the fear porn we've been fed.
Also, according to your post, masks have been used to reduce community spread for THOUSANDS OF YEARS? MMMMMMKAYYYY.
Surgeons wear masks so blood doesn't get in their mouth and nose. In fact, before the 'deadly Covid pandemic' the science on masks was PRETTY INCONCLUSIVE AS TO THEIR EFFICACY.
Excuse my caps but I am getting pretty fed up with the sanctimonious self-educated virologists pontificating from behind their stupid, ineffective masks.

That is inconceivable. But then, does not the world have too many conceptions?

As for some recent discussions, T-Cell immunity might mean a vaccine can help provide herd immunity.

I think the problem here is that many people who THINK they are healthy can actually carry and spread the virus, thus everyone has to take precautions. And as for masks - you are right, BEFORE the pandemic the verdict on masks was inconclusive. Now, with the benefit of much more experience, the experts overwhelmingly support their use. And I'm not talking about "self-educated virologists" but highly trained professionals, whose opinions I continue to think are of more value than most.

This one is for actual Dominicans and residents, and please excuse my ignorance of the subject in advance.....Does the D.R. have a childhood vaccination program similar to the U.S. and/or Europe? What is the perception of vaccinations by Dominicans? Feel free to differentiate by class. Do they trust them?

Maybe you will consider the Mayo Clinic,

1. Myth: I'm not sick so I don't need to wear a mask.
Simply put, wearing a cloth mask helps decrease the spread of the COVID-19 virus. Researchnow has shown that a significant number of people with COVID-19 lack symptoms. These people do not know they are transmitting the virus to others when they talk, sneeze, cough or raise their voice (e.g., singing or shouting). Wearing a mask helps to lower the transmission of respiratory droplets to other people around you. You should wear a mask to protect others, and they should wear masks to protect you.

2. Myth: Wearing a cloth mask does not protect you from getting COVID-19.
A cloth mask is worn to help protect others in case you have the virus. Countries that required face masks, testing, isolation and social distancing early in the pandemic seem to have had some success slowing the disease's spread. Common sense also suggests that some protection is better than none.

Cloth masks reduce the number of respiratory droplets a person releases into the air when talking, sneezing or coughing. The overall number of droplets in the air is reduced when more people wear masks, and this reduces the risk of being exposed to COVID-19.

Mayo Clinic is ranked number 1 in the United States for 2019-20 U.S. News & World Report Best Hospitals Honor Roll,[17] maintaining a position at or near the top for more than 27 years.[18] It has been on the list of "100 Best Companies to Work For" published by Fortune magazine for fourteen consecutive years, and has continued to achieve this ranking through 2017.[19][20] Drawing in patients from around the globe, Mayo Clinic performs near the highest number of transplants in the country, including both solid organ and hematologic transplantation

In 2016-17, Mayo Clinic, Rochester, was ranked as the #1 overall hospital in the United States by U.S. News & World Report. A total of almost 5,000 hospitals were considered and ranked in 16 specialties from cancer and heart disease to respiratory disorders and urology; 153 (just over 3 percent of the total) were ranked in at least one of the 16 specialties. Of the 153 hospitals that are ranked in one or more specialties, 20 qualified for the Honor Roll by earning high scores in at least six specialties. Mayo Clinic, Rochester, was ranked in the top 10 in all but one of 16 specialties, in the top 4 in 13 specialties, and was the #1 ranked hospital in 8 of the 12 data-driven specialties.

Bollocks. Colombia has had an incredibly rigid lockdown and the virus is raging through the population. Allegedly.
Meanwhile, in Africa, where people are just living their best life, sharing germs like it's going out of style, things are going great!

I am not a virus denier. My point is that collapsing the world economy with these RIDICULOUS lockdowns is not the answer.

Isolate at risk, older, comorbid, in nursing homes etc. Lots of people who die with CV19 were likely going to die soon anyways. Younger people with normal immune systems are fine, even if/when you had it.

Yes, the usual childhood vaccinations are free from state health centres. In my experience parents of all social classes are aware of the importance. I've only heard anti-vax opinions from one Dominican mother, she is upper-middle-class US-educated but I suspect she still had her children vaccinated because you have to show a vaccination certificate as a pre-requisite for school enrollment.

Smallpox, polio and a few others have been - for the most part - eliminated by the use of vaccines. Stay safe until one is available and then make a decision what is best for you.

No it is not best practices in a pandemic to only isolate the sick.
What you call fear porn is the medical opinions of doctors who have spent their lives studying epidemics.
Surgeons are equipped with suction
devices to control blood and there is no splatter.
This is a medical issue and what you call common sense often differs not ap

People can use what they think is their excellent common sense or listen to the epidemiologists.
We are all free to follow or dismiss the medical experts advice but it would seem wise to at least know what they say.

Here is our own platinum Bob Saunders sharing his common sense idea on the forum.

"I am exposed daily to hundreds of grubby hands, runny noses, ...etc. Perhaps it builds up your immune system"

First virus in the history of the world where 'asymptomatic' people spread it - this simply isn't how a virus works.

Unfortunately, that's exactly how it sometimes works. Someone may eventually develop symptoms (or not) but they can still transmit. HIV and HSV are two notable examples. "I have this terrible cold and don't know anyone who is sick" is another example.
