If one person was shot or ten people were shot, it is still the fault of the person who discharged the firearm... the murderer might wish to plead extenuating circumstances .
Absolutely the policeman is at fault for firing his gun off, inadvertantly killing the boy. JD is also correct that if the father had did as he was told by the police , a gun would not have been pulled and fired.

This incident is shining a spot light on the PN and how the general public is not
happy about how all of this went down.
For those of you who have spent a lot of time here in some of the bigger cities
have you ever wondered who are the police wearing the black mask (balaclavas)?
Well it sounds like many people feel uncomfortable with them around and are now
calling from them to be unmasked.

There are many segments here that will always have problems with the P.D There are many many more that will have zero problems with the P.D For the people that constantly have issues with the P.D my suggestion would be to seek consistent employment, do not drive like an idiot, do not antagonize the P.D over juvenile macho bull sheet and ( this is a big one) do not commit crimes.

The reason for the balaclava is obvious, those police live in the community, and they usually work in drug enforcement. There is a lot of drug dealing going on and the criminals are dangerous. Better that people cannot identify you.

undereducated and unsophisticated people have a problem with authority. My manliness is not called into question because a uniformed individual told me to turn down the radio or directed me to turn around because the road is closed. I respect the police.
I'm a retired electrical engineer and a father. I'm also a community volunteer with the election board. But even with all that sophistication, I would not allow myself to pass of old age or sickness until I exact my revenge on that cop.

In that regard, ricpaq, You would have to go about your revenge with much secrecy and prudence. The father of the Christian girl murdered by a policeman inside her car near Villa Altagracia was arrested ,handcuffed and put away simply because he had purchased a gun.The police knew of his desire to seek revengeand were keeping an eye on him. The policeman who murdered the girl and her husband and who was witnessed by other Cristianos in a car behind was never charged. The police here are akin to the Mafia and far better to stay away from them. In my opinion.

I don't do any of the things that you mention in your last sentence, but I do have a problem with the police here regarding what I see happening to other people regarding their over-aggressive, corrupt behaviour. They should act in a manner which will gain the people's respect.

Neither the people, nor their respect pay the bills nor do they provide them with the power to act as they choose.

Money and power are what most people care about. The entire idea that the police "fight for what is right, protect the downtrodden and stamp out criminal behavior" is a ridiculous propaganda line. The police are a private army that are subsidized by the taxpayers and who answer to and follow the orders of a small set of individuals.

I do not agree with this school of thought. This is exactly the reason prisons are full. Seeking revenge for an accident on an individual attempting to do a job. I understand emotions. However most educated people do not respond in this way.

typical. The P,D get mucho kudos when they arrest and incarcerate violent criminals. Some have even played out on this very site. A young PD officer committed an unfortunate accident and the entire P.D is a band of Vikings, raping and pillaging the entire island.

This is exactly what happens when we generalize. People are individuals, not collectives. Some are cool, some are not, at least by our standards.

..because your children may end up being shot dead?
I agree.
This country still has a long way to go and I've no doubt they will remain in "developing" status for many years to come.

He's applying Western logic to a Dominican situation. He has trouble understanding the PN in this country are nothing like the PN up north.

I disagree, even in the most " advanced and democratic " nations it is necessary to show governments, and by extension their domestic armed wing ( ie the police force, in whatever flavour they may come ), that they are in power ( and in the police's case, conferred power ) by the graces of the People.

The DR People are lacking in that department.

Checks and balances, checks and balances.

So long as they apply the same checks and balances to their own, I agree with you. I take it you're not a fan of selective enforcement?
Had this officer been properly trained when, where and how to use a firearm I do not think it would have ended this way. Do I think they are all bad? Hell no but there are several running around carrying guns in public who probably shouldn't be allowed to do so and this incident backs up my point.
Did you see how they responded once the kid was hit?

now now now. I mostly wear a navy blazer or sport coat, no suits, no necktie either, and yes, I do not sit on plastic chairs eating out of Styrofoam containers. But hey... I won't. judge you.
and i thought italians only wore tracksuits

I was not talking about this particular "unfortunate accident" as you call it, but to your comment that "There are many many more that will have zero problems with the P.D For the people that constantly have issues with the P.D my suggestion would be to seek consistent employment, do not drive like an idiot, do not antagonize the P.D over juvenile macho bull sheet and ( this is a big one) do not commit crimes." I was giving my reasons why in general I have little respect for the police here.

Yes I do have trouble understanding your extreme disdain for the PD. As do my business colleagues, my friends and the people I socialize with.
