Catastrophic Drought

North east / peninsula of Samana is DRY DRY DRY !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

In almost 20 years I have never seen this place so dry.
Saman? has always been known for its lush vegetation and good rainfall. This prolonged drought is catastrophic.
Grass is dust now.
Smaller trees are dying.
We wish the towering thunderstorm clouds we see over Haitises would come north...but they don't. :(

That was a heavy storm hey Mike? I don't recall a storm like that in a long time... it kept seeming to end, and then it would start up again..I noticed some small flooding the next day I hadn't seen in a while

nooo,
completely wrong.
it was not a heavy storm,
as fact it was zero of a storm at all.
some hours of some rain with a bit of thunder and not even with any wind involved,
could sure not be named anything of a storm.
sure the freakin' nuthead american weather networks would name a few rainy hours a storm, warn about hurricanes or such,
but here we are in the real world,
nothing of any storm happened, not even a slight bit close to such.

i came back from the Marina around 30 minutes ago,
and well,
for the first time in soooo many MONTHS,
i really had to use my wipers 5 or 6 times,
for a moment each time to get rid of some drops,
but it was almost raining.
i don't remember the last time that i was out of the house driving somewhere and it did really RAIN???
i didn't o day neither,
arrived home dry and still no mor "rain" around here.
the puerto rican radar also looks clear,
if we get some "rain" it will be isolated by areas droppings, no real rain.

Roads were flooded just past the new car wash on the way to PRV, so it was a fair amount of rain..

Saw lightening over POP last night. Heard no thunder and not sure if it rained at all over there, but I am definitely ready to strip off the shorts and prance my yard around in the rain celebrating the need to not water the plants for a day or two. One of my cocos got so dry the trunk bent right over.

chances are good to get more this weekend.
there is quiet some waterload chumming up/collected over the northernmost Islands, around Puerto Rico and the NE of our eastshores.
maybe we get some more water,
we will see/feel soon which may it moves, or if it as usual will just miss us again by a few miles.

It's been partly to mostly cloudy for most of the day in Sosua and the clouds a light grey. There is moisture in the atmosphere, just not enough for it to start falling yet.

I'm hesitant to pick a broom as it might been seen by the Mrs. as a precedent setting event defining future expectations.

The dancing might work with no deleterious effects; the neighbours are already used to seeing me stumble forwards and backwards clutching glass trinkets most of the day.

Plus, I bet she uses that broom to check the roof tiles

As for the stumbling, it reminds me of the old saying...

I never knew he drank.............. until I saw him sober one day.

This perspective may amuse you............

...........................................................
GeoAlcoholism.. an Analysis

According to the as yet uninvented field of study to be known as geoalcoholism, the Western Hemisphere may be divided into a series of horizontal bands, determined by the dominant alcoholic staple for the zone in question and the way that it affects the drinker.

The northernmost band is the 'grain spirit' zone - Scotland, Scandanavia, Finland and the greater part of Russia.

The drinker of grain spirits seeks oblivion, trying to get drunk as quickly as possible, whereupon he tends to keel over. He can be violent and is capable of extravagant excesses that verge upon the poetic and is often seen in the streets on high holidays and other times in a condition of considerable disorder. Although he will drink wine - in fact , he will drink anything - his favorite tipple is hard liquor.... beer is regarded as a chaser.

The hard liquor belt favors writers, journalists, and those who lead active, outdoor lives. It does not suit steady and regular indoor work at repetitive jobs and is the wrong place entirley to look for a willing and able industrial proletariat.

This is to be found in the second zone, which provided the work force for the first Industrial Revolution.

Its staple is beer, and it includes England, northern France, the Low Countries and the Ruhr, while nowadays much beer is also consumed in Japan.

Beer drinkers tend to get bloated rather than drunk, becoming owlish, morose or a little brutal. For those who work in overheated environments such as steel mills, beer is positively beneficial in replacing lost fluids.
The beer belt has been the chief supplier of skilled and semi-skilled laborers ever since the Industrial Revolution.

Below the beer belt comes the wine belt, the culture of southern Europe from the Iberian Peninsula through southern France, Italy, Greece, southern Germany and Austria.

The serious wine drinker seldom becomes drunk - but is rarely sober.... he remains perpetually pickled.
While his liver holds out, he can be a charming companion, a raconteur at his best when at a cafe table holding forth to his friends.
Peasants, small businessmen, traders, civil servants and middlemen flourish in the wine belt. Unless one loves the hard work or the poetry of absolute drunkeness, the wine belt is the most pleasant of the three.

To its south, alcohol ceases altogether and yields to Islam with mint tea, sweetmeats and hashish.

now we have a well sized Tropical Wave SSE of the Cape Verdes.
til now the area is not very active, but moves a fair amount of moisture along the 10thN westward.if it catches a bit of a swing the next couple days, it could become a system producing thunderstorms, while riding on the usual good 10mphr westwards.
over all, the Highway is dry and stable, a good amount of dry sand SAL up in the Atmosphere.
if it gets some TS areas produced and concentrated together the next days, development will stay slow, but lookspossible.
I don't think it will make it over the half way point of the Highway,
but it could become a pavement layer, moistering the Lane around the 10thN for the for the first 800-1000 miles of the farest end of the Highway.
so we have to look out for Followers, approaching the Atlantic from the african mainland during the first half of this week.

nothing of any threat in vicinity of our Isle.
the waterloads, which built up the last couple days, are not on a straight way in to relief us from drought,
most is moving near of our NE.
let's grab every piece of water available, at least of it's outer portions.

have a great sunday everyone

Mike

yeah,
it also built up a large portion over our Island this afternoon,
actually even close to my eastshores,
it's already cloudy since a while,
LET IT RAIN DOWN ON ME, BABY!!!

as for the Tropical Wave SE of the Cape Verdes,
it may become the first Cape Verde System of the season to watch.
since this morning only, it concentrated a good amount of TS activity in one area,
that shows it feels well within the given environment.
we may get one brewing out there,
lets see how it manages the next

55 mm in 4 Hours

LET IT RAIN DOWN ON ME, BABY!!!

Hmm, that's strange. From what I see on the sat photos and the PR/VI radar you should now have rain over there.

Anyway, since noon we've had 55mm of rain, a good amount indeed.
We are expecting more rain tonight (thunder rumbling announcing it).

Of course, we need much more, the soil is extremely dry, grass is scorched.
Rain dancers, do not stop your thing!

Mona Passage

There is a heavy thunderstorm buildup (marine warning) in the northern part of the Mona Passage, slowly moving westward.
Its waterload is welcome.
