A lot of businesses closed in Sosua

They have been saying something will happen soon.

There will be some changes coming to Sos?a soon.

Word on the street is everything closed until further notice; comodo's closed also.

There is discussion of regulating the hours of operation of the businesses on PC. Again, nothing has been finalized. Part of the problem is how certain businesses will be categorized. Whether they will be designated as a "bar", "disco" or "restaurant" will determine their opening and closing times.

Certainly reports that "everything is closed until further notice" needs some confirmation and explanation if true.

Or simply observing national drinking establishment closing hours at midnight weekdays and 2am at weekends unless licensed otherwise.

The directive was given to CESTUR yesterday to inform the businesses on Pedro Clisante that effective immediately, as of 08-July-2016, all business serving alcohol must close at 12:00am on Sunday through Thursday and at 2:00am on Friday and Saturday. And as posted above these are the current national regulations, however here in Sos?a they have been given a "free ride" for a long time.

Also as I posted above depending on how certain businesses are designated will dictate whether they will be able to stay open beyond the hours indicated.

AS OF LAST NIGHT, certain businesses were informed that as restaurants, for example Bourbon Street Grill, they will be allowed to remain open past the designated closing times, but must not serve alcohol, others designated as bars or discos such as Rumba, Classico, etc. were informed they must conform to the new closing times.

This is how CESTUR communicated last night's operation to the local business owners. Most were not informed before the arrival of CESTUR in the evening. And the process of informing each establishment was anything but formal or organized, whoever was present at the time CESTER arrived at their establishment was informed of the changes, in some cases only regular employees were present and not managers or owners. It's obvious many details remain to be "worked out" but the general directive was communicated.

Apparently el procurador de la Rep?blica, Francisco Dominguez Brito is in town and will be visiting himself and making some sort of statement (another one), soon. Let's see . . .

Or perhaps "None Shall Pass"

My take is simple, having seen many many crackdowns over the years:

"This too shall pass"

How this is going to help businesses in Sosua at this low season I have no idea, earlier closure means less money for them, I heard a few people were saying "let's go to Cabarete/Puerto Plata", let's hope this law is also firmly implemented there.

Seems weird to clamp down in the off season, when the businesses could use the $$$$, but It seems Brito is on a mission.

So this is only bars on PC? I closed coco bar last night at 12 then drove past Cestur and they had the road blocked with about 12 police trucks and at least 50 police were in the backs of trucks etc and they looked serious as they all started to take off in the trucks. I heard the rumour earlier about the midnight thing...

It's an excellent idea to alienate tourists. It's not like they are the ones who bring in the money.

Good thing is, give it a few year and the problem will solve itself. Cuba will have taken lot's of 'business' from the NC, all streets are empty and no one can complain anymore.

Of course, Sosua can then concentrate on the 500k condos. What person who has that kind of money would not want to trade the 'I have a condo at the Bahamas, BVIs, Caymans or St.Martin' for 'I have a condo in the Dominican Republic'.

Why, the ones who were waiting for this clean up of Sosua to happen, of course.

Back to the news. So is the closure of these bars really until further notice or just until they understand that they have to close at the hours the government already mandates?

That would indicate that all businesses must close at the legal times in Sosua with no exceptions. It does not say anything about any business that will be closed until further notice.

By the way, what happens in other places with regard to exemptions in closing times is different than what will happen in Sosua. Sosua (and maybe Boca Chica?) are "special"

I would read the article slightly differently. An adherence to national closing hours to all drinking establishments without exception is being used as one mechanism to deal with prostitution in Sosua.

I would suggest you await further developments as the article indicates.

One also need to note that this action is being taken by the Brito, Ministry of Tourism and National Police collectively and may to be something promoted by central government rather than local politicians.

For those readers that don't reside in RD, you should be aware that there is real central government sensitivity dealing with a current wave of insecurity of the population. Crime, drugs and prostitution have been publicly linked in Sosua. Expatriates exploiting women has also been reported in the media.

As for opening hours, my experience in the campo was that there were regular purges to ensure that drinking establishments toed the line. Not always effective for long however. In Santo Domingo there was an outcry very recently about late night noise from bars, car washes and the like and numerous establishments were closed down in places such as Av Venezuela and Zona Oriental. Again crime was linked to late night early morning drinking in such places.

When did Casa 21 sell?
Hello,

We did not sell our Casa Veintiuno/21. We are still open and actually expending. The new project called Casa 22 will be open mid August 2016 and our Casa 21 is not closed meanwhile. Best regards, Saskia owner of Casa Veintiuno/21
