Even if the mayor can snap her fingers and the prositities gone; what about the scam artist. Ok, family eating at restaurant on P C and guy walks up to husband wants to sell viagra, how long will these families be around. Puns Cana was cut out of a jungle so they could plan it the way they wanted. Families will never come to Sosua.
I'm just a tourist, but I've seen some family tourist towns. It's just my opinion that there are many things that would have to happen to make Sosua one. I'm indifferent to the chicas. Get rid of them overnight if possible. Here are just my thoughts.
Improved hotels. Most Sosua hotels have mongers in them because they aren't up to American family standards
Cestur that speaks English or other languages and actually helps tourist instead of just walking like they're going to the OK corral
Information booths or better signage around town
Organized transportation that doesn't rip you off or risk your life. Maybe like a marked local bus system. Designated can and moto areas would help
Wider sidewalks and/or pedestrian area for shopping
The old and young beggars and vendors that turn into beggars when you don't buy really gotta go. Especially the young ones that like to mumble bad words when you say no
Less aggressive beach vendors. Most annoying Sosua beach vendor could probably be a topic on its own
Street lighting is pretty bad in spots
Pickpockets, and no, they aren't all hookers, need to be addressed. I knew a cop from family tourist town and their solution to undesirables in the tourist area was that they would arrest them, drive them 30-40 miles out of town, slap them around and leave them there.
That's just some things off the top of my head.
As for Sosua beach, if it turns into Condos, then Sosua will never see me again. I know I'm just one tourist, but I like the lawless disorganized chaos. It feels like a foreign experience. I don't want complaining families around who throw a tantrum when the electricity goes out or they don't get an extra towel. Yes, I have seen both.
If I wanted to go to a place with a perfectly manicured pedestrian area that had American dollar dispensing ATMs, then I'd go to Playa Del Carmen. It's just one man's opinion, but I want to feel like I'm in a foreign place even if it is the touristy little town that's just a notch more genuine than the big AI.
